HTPC downstairs, tv upstairs . possible?

I would like to keep the htpc downstairs out of sight, are there any products that would make this easier, without extremely long cables and drilling holes? I have directv. any help appreciated greatly.

so if i was running sage tv on my xp machine downstairs, i could get the sage tv extender for upstairs, and hook it to my workgroup switch for network access, but how would the pc downstairs change the channels on the Directv Set top box upstairs? I know the tuner cards come with ir blasters, but would that work from downstairs? also will sage tv stream hi def content over the network, wireless G?

You'll almost certainly need to have your STB downstairs by the HTPC. I don't know of any solutions which don't require that.

if you already have Ethernet run between the locations you can look at HDMI over Ethernet and bluetooth/RF control of the PC. If you don't well....

wow I guess I will have to just build a htpc and put it by the tv, will I lose any picture quality? I will be running S- video into the tuner card, and then to a dvi port on my Tv. I mainly want to use the htpc for dvr, and streaming downloaded HD video from my rig downstairs. I am using an old xbox for streaming now, but I really want dvr and hd capabilities. would sage tv be a good choice, or MCE?

Why don't you just use a DirecTV DVR?
