HTPC Graphics Driver Question

The AMD Media Codec Package: what does it do? I've never installed it. Would it help my HTPC in any way? Does W7 or the standard catalyst drivers automatically take advantage of hardware accelerating video without that additional package?

The brief text description makes it sound like it includes codecs that allow transcoding to be accelerated in some form by the GPU.

Mostly you just want your player to be taking advantage of DXVA so that it can utilize the UVD in your card. If it's not, you're wasting video quality/power/etc. Don't ask me how to check this though, I don't have any Radeon cards.

That's what I seemed to get from what I found on the web, but it isn't really clear. I installed it just for the hell of it; haven't seen much of a difference.

I use the CCCP codec package with my HD3850...Media Player Classic Homecinema uses DXVA right out the box

I think for standard stuff, W7 already has hardware acceleration available. At least, it's generally an option that you can select. I was just wondering what the AMD offered package did.
