Looks very cool - but couldn't get me from my home to work.
Mapquest & Yahoo have no trouble with that.

It found my home address with no problem, but can't find my work address. And it's not particularly obscure.

What is the over/under on when Google becomes self-aware and launches a strike against the humans?

Google is just friggin awesome. Best mapping site to date. The whole dragging the mouse around to move the map has been long overdue. Great work Google. Oh, and it's so much faster than Mapquest.

MapPoint does this.

Google doesn't directly tell you the direction of travel on each street, but it can be inferred from the asymmetry of the driving directions. (If you click reverse directions, it doesn't take the exact same streets going the other way because of the 1-ways).

looks similar MS Streets and Trips but web based. The name of my street still doesnt show up. guess having 6 houses in a culdesac doesnt help either. anyway great interface when you need directions

hmm, It looks pretty and all, but it has a hard time giving directions when mapblast and mapquest have no problems with it. Also. The first thing i did was put in my current address in Canada and tried to get directions to my parents address in PA and it took me almost 2 hours out of the way.

Of course. Nearly all other mapping sites/software does this as well.

Here is a quick example of MapPoint directional street mapping. The advantage being one does not have to plan a trip over such to learn which in which direction a given street (or collection of streets) travel. The example used in the city is a case where it wouldn't really matter (as the streets are very grid-like), but there are cases where it does, of course - Queens comes to mind,. Also, MapPoint can add reference landmarks by default, if desired (subway/transportation stations, museums, stores, etc).

Not discounting Google at all. I hope to make use of Google as well. Just unfortunately lacks some functionality that may or may not be added as a part of the Beta (likely not).

Again, for free access (MapPoint costs, of course - in general), Google seems better than most of the other options.

Well, I'm definatly going to give this a try, it's the best interface I have seen for web-maps. If it's rough around the edges I'm sure that won't take google long to fix... It's also the first map I have seen that shows my appts. streets.

This looks kinda like the whole map24 deal.

Google was using them for directions in europe for a while and mapquest I think for the US. Looks like they licenced it for the US as well.

Neat but it's quite outdated. Roads by me don't go through even though they've been built up for many years now.
