Camera seems to have hit the ball right out of the park!?

Keen to see how the rest of the OEMs react..

Well done Huawei!

pointless notch and no headphone jack, no thanks.
Yeah, pretty sad.

It's almost like Huawei's answer to not being nearly as relevant outside of China as they initially hoped, is just to jump on the current "me too! me too!" bandwagons of removed features and copy everything Apple does.

I know Apple didn't invent 'the notch' but I think they've popularized it and now others are copying it mostly from Apple. I hope the whole notch idea dies a quick death in 2018. The look of them is a backward progression to me.

And yes, I know the Huawei phone has a software mode that fills the notch black to appear its not there. That just begs the question... why not that design in the first place? People are actually clamoring for that ugly wasted screen space around the notch? Who?

Interesting, and seems like it could be impressive. But the price, difficulty of getting one with warranty support, and other hassles means I wouldn't likely consider one at all.

I'm fine with notches, but with a design like this its kinda stupid. Why not just have one side have a chin and put all the stuff in there? Or do symmetrical notches, with a larger camera sensor and a smaller fingerprint sensor (or 2nd camera sensor, for iris/facial recognition/3D scanning), surrounded by speaker port (so get stereo speakers, and more typical sound waveform from circular shape).

I don't even mind losing the headphone jack since I think most modern headphones have removable cables, and they include adapters (they should make one that locks onto a typical 3.5mm jack though, so that you can keep it with your headphones easily and not lose it). I'd kinda like USB/etc dual ports, so that you can plug it in and be able to listen to music without an adapter/splitter and without getting added noise from it. Plus it would enable other accessories.

They are getting better, though, for sure. AT has a coverage on P20 and P20P with camera comparison v. S9.

https://www.anandtech.com/show/12578/huawei-p20-and-p20-pro-hands-on-embrace-the-notch

It's a mixed bag overall. 40MP shots have too much chromatic abberation and 10MP shots are sharpened too much. Maybe another year or two they will perfect the formula. And start producing their own OLED panels, etc.

P.S. I am curious what happened to their P10 and P10 Pro which debuted earlier this year. Did they ever see the light of day?

I mistook P-series phones for Mate series phones earlier. Evidently it was the Mate 10/Pro which were released with Kirin 970, not the P10/Pro. IIRC the Mate series' highlight at the time was Kirin 970's special AI block.

https://www.anandtech.com/show/12195/hisilicon-kirin-970-power-performance-overview

As to the notch, look at the bright side - it was Apple's branding exercise more than anything else, and now that everyone else is doing it its value as Apple's trademark is going to be diminished. That means the fad might die down sooner than expected.

Something that gotten my attention is that P20's 5.8" screen is using RGBW LCD. Presumably it's a Pentile display and I am curious to see how it performs. Personally Pentile 1080p+ loses the clarity at 6" or larger screen in recent Samsung devices. I wonder if it's just the type of panel and its subpixel pitch or the limitation of Pentile arrangement.

Why design the phone to have extra wasted bezel when you can have extra screen space instead?

That argument for the side bezels has been relevant for years. The side bezels really were wasted space.

Top bezels I'd say much less so because they can actually serve a function, such as house sensors, cameras, speakers.

The notch idea (IMO) is just backward and aesthetically displeasing. Makes the phone look unbalanced to me. It's a bad compromise design IMO.

As for function of the space around the notch.. most of the time status bar is displaying more information than would fit shoved to just the sides. I'd have to have another full statusbar anyway or settle for less information. Either would be a rotten compromise for me so I'd really gain nothing from the supposed 'extra' space.

Like I said, I personally hope notches die off quickly.

The top bezel on the P20 Pro does house the camera and speaker. The space to the left and right of that would be wasted as just empty bezel. It’s better to use it as screen to display information.

I guess you missed where I said it wouldn't handle the the function of my actual statusbar...therefore NOT really extra space. I'd need another status bar below the 'half ass notch status bar... defeating the purpose, looking twice as fugly... same amount of screen real estate anyway to keep the same function. No thanks.

I also don't like how some full screen things render with the notch chopped out. I saw some things where the notch blocks scroll bars and some screen elements or just forces a misbalanced screen (again nothing gained if usable screen ends at the line of the notch anyway).

Classic example IMO of less is actually MORE. Far prefer a design and layout without the notch because there isn't actually a scenario where it really provides more ... not even for status bar function, really its ONLY function.

Well the whole point of the screen on either side of the notch is to house your status bar icons so that there is more screen for your actual content.

it FAILS the 'whole point' which is clearly the point you missed. I've pointed it out several times.

My statusbar displays all my network connections (wifi and mobile bars) status of bluetooth, GPS, volume, battery percentage icon, time AM/PM etc. It also shows notification status of apps I allow. I don't want less info displayed to accomodate a stupid notch. So having one gains NOTHING, it would actually lose information from my screen, or as I said require another statusbar anyway to show all the information ie: WHAT'S THE POINT!?

The problems in landscape as I said are even worse. That notch out of the side of apps I use (or everything being scrunched to end as if the notch was just a solid bar as it should be anyway- are just rotten compromises to a 'problem' that didn't need a half-assed non-solution in the first place. I think it's dreadful design and a classic case of 'more' being far less as there's not a single decent upside (a HALF-ASSED statusbar is NOT an upside) and all downsides (ugly, weird landscape issues, etc.)

Anyway, this thread is about the LG phones. We all know if the iPhoneX didn't have the notch and the LG did, you'd likely be laughing the loudest at it and pointing out what terrible design it is.

Sounds like you need to sort your status bar icons out so that they will fit.

Nah, my phone isn't just a series of bad compromises to accommodate someone else's 'I know what's best for you' half assed design choices.

Don't need to render my status bar half useless because there isn't s big honking piece of bezel down blocking it by a cheat of a design flaw.

Yeah keep telling yourself that. Kind of like how I'm missing out on NOT having 256GB of extra storage internally, a headphone jack, smaller bezels, wireless charging since 2014 or so, etc.

Now Im "missing out" on not having a big ugly, useless chunk taken out of my screen!

The best phones on the market are locked out to you because of your inability to adapt and change. You’ll only get left further and further behind as time goes on.

Heads up for fellow Brits?!

So went into EE store to have some hands on with the Huawei P20 Pro, and they have the Huawei P20 Pro on pay as you go, for just £499 when you top up £10.

£509 in total, which is much cheaper than what Carphone Warehouse are charging £799.

However, you cannot claim the free headphones anymore but for £499 for a flagship phone only launched is a bargain price.

Tempted to try it as I'm on EE but my S9 has been a revelation! Argh!

Lol! Your 'choice' is exactly ONE and limited even more every time one man (jony Ive) has another rotten idea he can't design his way past. But he knows what's best for you.

The Note 8 is still the best phone on the market and will continue to be until the Note 9 comes along hopefully without any dumb 'copy Apple!' non-features. Coming close so far is the s9.

IMO Huawei is out of the running so long as they do stupid stuff like notches and removing features.

I'll say it. Any phone without a headphone jack and decent removable storage isn't really a smartphone. It's a 'follow your corporate masters' phone.

Exactly. Love my very usable Note 8 and S9+
