Hub/router with hardware PPPoE capability?

I'm pretty much a newbie when it comes to networking stuff, so please bare with me... I have Bellsouth DSL, which uses PPPoE, and until recently, everyone in my house has accessed it through a Linksys switch. This has worked nicely -- we can all log in at the same time without any problems. Recently, however, it appears that only one person can be logged on at one time. So what I want to do now is get some kind of box that I can telnet to, tell it the settings I want, and have it login to the PPPoE account automatically, and have the various computers in the house access the Internet in this manner. Is there a (hopefully inexpensive) way to do this? Thanks.

I have SWB DSL (same thing) and I use a Netgear RT314. It does everything you asked for in your thread. I TELNET into it to configure filters and do my internet setup. It is not the most user-friendly piece of equipment, but after you learn it's quirks, it's a fantastic piece of hardware.

I do believe the RT314 has been supseded by a similarly name piece (RT317?). Same features, smaller physical box.

Thanks for the response. One more thing: do you access the Internet with some sort of DSL modem, or are you connected straight to the service? Apparently, our service is delivered via fiber optics, and for some reason, we don't need a modem. Will we be able to use this device without a broadband modem? Also, does it come with a repeater builtin? Thanks.

Typical aDSL setup... On your side, a telephone wire coming into a DSL modem. An ethernet cable going into the wan port of your 'router.' Then more ethernet going out to your nodes... Just remember to put microfilters on all other phone type appliances.

Do the new Netgears allow you to control them via a web browser? I know linksys do...

No, no, no, I don't have a DSL modem. What the technician told me when it was installed is that the DSL here arrives via fiber optics, not phone lines, so what we have is a Cat5 cable delivering the DSL to the switch, which then distributes the connection to the computers in the house. What I'm asking is if it is necessary to have a broadband modem to use a router (or hub; I get the terminology confused) -- all the ones I've seen in stores show a modem plugging into the router. I also need one with a builtin repeater. I don't know if this is standard issue or not, but we live quite a distance from the street, so we need some kind of repeater right where the DSL enters the house. Thanks.

If your DSL arrives via fiber (Which doesn't sound right to me, but anyway) and then you have cat 5 going into your hub/computer, what converts the fiber to cat 5? You should be able to put a router at the end of your cat 5, then plug your devices in to the router. I have used a Linksys BEFSR41 with PPoE and it worked nicely. It had all of the appropriate settings for PPoE and worked nicely.

Hmm... maybe I'm mistaken about the fiber optics bit, but I know for certain that I don't have a DSL modem, just a cable with an RJ45 connector on it that I plug into my Linksys 4 port switch. Anyways, would the Netgear equipment listed above work with my setup?
