TOKYO (Reuters) - Nissan Motor Co (7201.T), Japan's third-largest auto maker, said on Thursday it would recall 2.55 million cars worldwide at an estimated cost of 15 to 16 billion yen ($138-148 million) due to an engine defect.

The recall applies to 1.02 million cars in Japan spanning 25 models, making it the second-biggest ever by an auto maker in Japan, a Transport Ministry official said.

The biggest was also by Nissan, involving about 1.05 million cars in May 1996.

A Nissan spokeswoman said the cost of the recall had been factored into profit forecasts for the business year to next March. Some of the cost will be shared by parts makers, she said.

Earlier this month, Nissan said it would keep its full-year operating profit forecast unchanged at 820 billion yen ($7.58 billion), up 11 percent from last year.

Shares of Nissan, owned 44.4 percent by France's Renault (RENA.PA), fell on the recall news. The stock closed down 0.73 percent to 1,221 yen after touching a high of 1,273 yen.

Some analysts had expressed concern about possible quality issues at Nissan, which has been expanding its product line-up and output volumes at break-neck speed over the past few years.

The defect was found inside a sensor in the engine that could lead to a short-circuit and stop the engine from working. There have been no reports of accidents caused by the problem.

The recall affects many popular cars manufactured between 1998 and May 2003, including the Sunny, March, Cube, Primera, Presage, X-Trail, Skyline and Fairlady Z, as well as two cars built for Subaru-maker Fuji Heavy Industries (7270.T) and Mazda Motor Corp (7261.T) on an OEM (original equipment manufacturer) basis.

That's a pretty big recall. Anyone know which "sensor" it is they're talking about?

It's a problem which occurs when the cars stall. After they have stalled, they have a problem in restarting IIRC.

Not that I'm a Nissan fanboy, but some of Ford's recalls have been due to defects a lot more dangerous than this one.

Every car company has recalls, Ford just happens to be the most proactive about getting their vehicles fixed.

Does anybody remember the Chevy/GMC side fuel tanks that NEVER got fixed?

I still say Nissan makes a much better car/truck than any "US" brand.

I have had 4 nissans over the last 18 years and here is a list of problems I experienced...

On my 1983 4X4 - a blown heater core!

End of list.

A friend of mine at work has a 98 F-150 and he has had MANY problems with it. He also blew a heater core recently and it cost him approximately 500 dollars to fix it. He also has had front end problems, brake problems and his catalytic converters both plugged up. That on cost him a ton of money to replace the converters.

It isn't like I hate Ford or Chevy or whatever, but I don't think the quality is up there with Japanese makers yet overall.

bad oil pressure sensor could cause the engine to stop as it shuts off the fuel pump on low/no oil pressure.

They actually have the oil pressure sender tied into the ignition system that way now? I had no idea.

Most cars with fuel injection have a similar set-up. It prevents the fuel pump form running after an engine losses oil pressure.

Nissan is still overall more reliable and is less prone to recalls (e.g. Ford Focus) than it's domestic competitors.

My one sister-in-law used to drive a Nissan Altima.

She likes her Ford Focus much better.
