Seems like the prices took major drops all over the place. Tons of online retail stores are reflecting the price drops. I'm seeing like $50 drops nearly across the board. This is great

now they just need to make the 3700+ more available.

I hope intel responds accordingly as well. Nothing but good comes from pricewars for us

I'd bet a good chunck of change you could NOT tell performance differences between similarly rated competing processors in a double blind test using whatever apps you choose without relying on benchmarks to make the choice for you.

All you'd have to do is check CPU temperature at full load to tell the difference . . .*P

yup, my A64 is substantially higher than my P4C was

A64 3200+ 51C Idle @ 1.575V
P4 2.8C 38C idle @ 1.575V

Not a good comparison.
You should be comparing the A64 3200 with a 3.2 PIV, or the PIV 2.8 with a 2800+.
Most people on water don't even get >=3.2PIV to idle at 38C.

whats the difference? they both use the same voltage.

maybe you are talking about Presscott cuz most all northwoods i have seen idle below 40C

Well, my 3000+ @ almost 3400+ speed overclocked runs 32c idle and 42c full load. Maybe you have a wimpy HSF on the Athlon64, and good one one the P4. Regardless, you should at least be comparing a 2800+ to your P4 2.8 MHZ ALSO contributes to heat, not just the voltage !

there can be a huge difference just changing motherboards, unless you used an external probe on both systems your claim can be very unaccurate.

I plan on using my existing video and sound cards.(BFG Tech NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4600, and soundblaster live! value)

Can anyone recommend memory, I want 1Gb but i dont know what type to buy.

Also i hear theres more price drops coming for this chip on monday(tommrow) so I'll sit tight untill then.

Getting ready for Doom III

That was close. I was a week away from buying the 3800 or maybe even the FX-53 but now I don't know if I could resist the 3500+ with my Koolance rig and be able to use the extra 300 to 500 bucks on better components. YES!

zalman CNPS7000 on both of them. i understand the mhz adds to the heat but 13C?!?!

(right now i am idling at 55C so its more like 17C)

i have a feeling that the K8V deluxe readings are inaccurate but i have search the net for anything along the lines of the Asus overreporting temps and found nothing

i was kinda wishy-woshy about getting a amd64 before, but because of this awesome price drop, sign me on!!!

And to think i was contemplating about waiting for socket 939, these socket 754 prices are just too hard to resist.

socket 939 3500+ price isn't that bad either.

Amd cut a bunch of athlon xp's out also.

The price cuts are rather large. The 3700 was only like 500 on the amd site down from 710 a week ago.

The FX-53's will not drop in price ever. I would be surprised to see it ever fall below 750.00 until the FX-55 comes out. AMD has stated that is how it is going to be

They just officially released the Sempron's too. I don't think you can actually BUY one yet, but the Sempron 3100+ is $120 (in quantities of 1000), and it's a Paris core 1.8GHz, 256KB L2 Cache with no 64-bit support. In other words, it's a cheaper Athlon 64 Newcastle with half the L2 cache and no 64-bit support.

Does great on benchmarks. AWESOME for a budget chip, although I'd much rather spend more money for a higher-end chip.
