Huge problems with Windows 10

Well I gave it a try. Here are my specs:

Core i7-4790K
ASRock Z97 Extreme9
8 GB 2400MHz DDR3-RAM
2xPowercolor 290X
Intel 750 SSD

At first I couldn't get Windows 10 installed properly. Had to switch cables around to finally get the menu to show (I would get a black screen and just see the mouse). Now I can freeze Windows 10 consistently when I try to install the AMD Catalyst driver 15.7.1 (the new 15.8 and the older ones work though), which are getting automatically downloaded. Windows 10 also freezes while I try to install the Intel network drivers. And it freezes when I try to deactivate Crossfire. Also the Catalyst Driver somehow never installed the HDMI Audio driver.

All in all it is a mess. Haven't had those problems with any Windows version. Even the much hated Vista worked flawlessly for me on launch day.

Any suggestions?

Personally, I've been using WIN X awhile now and had to go back a version to get my extended screen to work with my older 47" screen on the side.

It's been hit and miss, so far to me it seems like some AMD Catalyst drivers are still a bit buggy with it yet, though it's working fine now.

You can just turn the updates off, if it's working now to stop auto, have just been plowing through things myself awhile and trying to adjust to X.

Not sure of the links off hand, but there are several WIN X threads in here all ready you could search the forum for.

Well I haven't found anybody with the problems I mentioned. I mean I can install the Catalyst now, it's just that some parts of it don't for some odd reason (the audio part). The auto update in windows also fails to install it. I always get an error message.

And the freezes are the most annoying. Can't deactivate Crossfire and I can't install the network driver.

I do not use Crossfire myself these days, so that could be another issue.

Sorry, trying to help but maybe someone else knows more later.

Sorry I forgot to add that everything is watercooled. So while it is possible for me to remove one card, I would prefer not to (unless there is no other way).

Mind you Windows 8.1 was rockstable.

It looks like all your problems in Windows 10 are related to graphics one way or the other. So I dont think you gonna get it working as such until you try 1 card unfortunately.

Well I think that the fundamental problem is showing itself mostly though my GPUs, but I have other problems:

1. Installing the Intel Network drivers also causes Windows 10 to freeze.

2. Trying to load the Intel NVMe driver during the Windows 10 setup during a fresh install also freezes the entire install process.

Is anything overclocked at all? Might try going to stock speeds just to rule out an issue stemming from there.

Use this uninstall utility. It uninstalls everything AMD, including audio drivers.

Wait for it to finish, reboot, then install your new drivers. FYI you need to download AMD drivers that are specifically for Windows 10. Windows 7 drivers won't work correctly.

Well I finally figured it out, after reading about some related problems online. Even trying a fresh install didn't help and strangely going back to Windows 8.1 also resulted in the same problems (it worked before).

The culprit is the ASMedia SATA 3 chip. I deactivated it and plugged all my SATA devices into the Intel port. Everything works fine now.

I really have no clue why the controller is making problems now, after it has been running fine for months. Maybe I will activate it again and install the newest driver. Not sure if I would screw up my system like that again though...
