Hugely Overrated Games

In general I find that I agree with gaming sites, but occasionally there's a real stinker of a game which just exposes gaming culture bias.

1. Metal Gear Solid 4. Awful game, especially compared to the great Metal Gear Solid 3. Good graphics, but level design was bland and didn't really force you to use stealth. I easily got to the end by the most brutal way: run and gun.

Also, the game was mostly cutscene, and the cutscenes were melodramatic and stupid. Worst offender was towards the end when a guy gets his limbs cut off MOnty Python style and then jumps around with a sword in his teeth. Yeah.

2. Zelda Ocarina of Time. I played Windwaker first before this one, and I found Windwaker to be superior in every imaginable fashion.

3. Mass Effect. Space marine saves the universe by shooting bad guys in an anti-septic universe. Something about this game was sterile and boring compared to other sci-fi universes like Halo or KOTOR

4. Dragon Age Origins. Too dark and serious, lots of long expository and dull dialogue. Combat system didn't really work either. It resembled world of warcraft very much and yet had a far less interesting art style and a far less interesting combat system.

Mass effect was epic... i havent played zelda or MGS, dragon age is overrated though. the cut scenes are cool though

Uncharted - First 30 minutes are good and it seems to be setting up a fantastic game. When I saw the Nazi submarine I thought I was in for a real adventure type experience. However, when you get away from it and into the first gunfight it is all downhill. So, so boring and disappointing.

Agree, though most people don't really rave about MGS4 specifically. It had a ton of widely recognized flaws

2. Zelda Ocarina of Time. I played Windwaker first before this one, and I found Windwaker to be superior in every imaginable fashion. ...Really? How do you figure? Honestly the water ruined Wind Waker. There was too much and it made the game feel incredibly sparse and boring to me when traveling. The actual gameplay itself was great, but it's no OoT

3. Mass Effect. Space marine saves the universe by shooting bad guys in an anti-septic universe. Something about this game was sterile and boring compared to other sci-fi universes like Halo or KOTOR. I like the Mass Effect series because it's very realistic from a "this might be what it's really like in the future" sort of way. It actually feels like our future and that fascinates me. Couple that with a fun story and Shepard (FEMALE ONLY) being awesome and it's a great series.

4. Dragon Age Origins. Too dark and serious, lots of long expository and dull dialogue. Combat system didn't really work either. It resembled world of warcraft very much and yet had a far less interesting art style and a far less interesting combat system. I agree about the combat; that's the reason I didn't finish the game. I enjoyed the locations, etc. though.

My list:

1. The last few, and probably the future, Halo games. They just aren't the same. 1 was great, 2 was really great too, 3 was pretty good, ODST was a waste of time, and Reach was extremely mediocre. Plus, Bungie isn't working on the series anymore. Why should I give a crap about some new dev team? They need to prove themselves before I get excited about ANYTHING they do, and you know what? Their Halo's will probably be inferior to Bungie's.

2. The Assassin's Creed series. I hesitated to put this one on here, because I really do like the games, but they really aren't that amazing; they're just good. I see people rave and rave about the series (first one aside) and I don't get it. They're fun games, but they've never been anything GotY worthy or anything.

3. Gears of War series. Another series I enjoyed, but don't think is amazing. For example, I'm going through the campaign of GoW3 with a friend currently and neither of us has really been all that impressed. It's fun, it's just not... fun... enough? I guess? I can't really explain my feelings for GoW. The first game was such a disappointment that I sold my original 360.

4. Resistance series. To be fair I haven't played the third game yet. The first two were just average shooters, though. Nothing special in any way imo.

Now that I re-read my list, it probably doesn't help that I prefer shooting people to aliens by a HUUUUUUGE margin... Also, I didn't bother listing the obvious "lol CoD series"

Ugh - you seriously listed two Bioware games here? And Mass Effect is boring? WTH ...

Both of these games are what you make them, especially if you consider the fact that both of them don't have the universe that KOTOR had to follow. Both ME and DAO were great games - granted, they both had some faults, but nothing that ruined it overall. The bummer about DAO and ME was just the fact they didn't bring over KOTOR's combat system.

I agree about assassin's creed. It had so much promise. I thought it would be sort of like thief meets prince of persia.

Instead, it was some sort of medieval GTA. You could escape the authorities by jumping in a bale of hay. Stupid.

GTA San Andreas and GTA Vice City were evolutionary improvements upon GTA 3, but still I didn't like very much.

I really can't emphasize enough how bad MGS4 was. I am baffled by the gushing praise for the game from so many websites. It was truly a bad game. Stealth was unnecessary and the level design didn't really force stealth. Instead it played more like an awkward Call of Duty game. The long cutscenes and the melodramatic and stupid story were even worse.

I was a PC gamer when Halo came out so I thought it wasn't so impressive compared to Half Life.

but I actually do think it's a good game. Pacing and combat is very well done and thought through. The game environments and enemies are also very colorful and creative. The ring world was very imaginative, and the story was interesting. Cortana was great.

Final Fantasy games yes, how could I forget.

Halo 2 was excellent due solely to multiplayer, so I'd say this opinion is subjective depending on which you're interested in.

Halo Reach is also pretty good, but I'm not sure it was ever "super highly rated", at least not that I've seen. It was just rated as a good game, which it is.

Final Fantasy VII was excellent as well as IX. I also really liked the XI online version, but you had to be pretty dedicated. VIII was terrible (IMO) and I'm having trouble getting into XIII.

Given the amount of value from each of the past few COD/MW games, I am going to say that they're hugely underrated and reviewers seem to take the side of the hardcore gamer's hate for the games.

Also, I would say that MGS4, I agree, is really overrated. Way too many cutscenes, barely any actual gameplay. Pretty sad, I loved MGS1 on PS1.

The first Assassin's Creed was way over hyped and overrated. Awful game with bad controls, bland missions, and tons of pointless filler to extend playtime. Thankfully, AC2 more than made up for it.

out of ones not mentioned here, I'm gonna have to say Haze. it was supposed to be the "Halo killer" on PS3.

granted, when it came out, it got totally ripped to shit for being an awful game. but before it was out it was supposed to beat halo like it owed it money.

also gonna have to say Little Big Planet. game has some of the worst controls i've ever seen in a platformer and the hype behind it was ridiculous. it was supposed to live off of user content but it seemed to have died out pretty quickly.
