Should probably clarify in the threat title or body that this is a DIRECTV receiver.

HD DirecTV receivers aren't that much really. It is the fact that ist is an HD recorder (DirecTivo) that makes it expensive. They have been 999.99 forever it seems for some unknown reason.

I was going to buy one of these till I saw the price. Time Warner Offers the HD DVR for 9.95 a month.

Can't believe those things cost so much.

the msrp is dropping to 700 in a couple of days, so it's nothing special. Expect to see pricing in the lower 600s for some online vendors.

Well, you actually own the DirecTV HDTV DVR Box. With Time Warner you don't own anything. Some people like to actually own their stuff.

Yeah but I could have my Time warner HD DVR for 7 years before it costs me as much as that Direct TV thing.

for a long time people were paying well over the $1k msrp for these.
However, with mpeg 4 looming at dtv and dish, any receiver purchase
should be carefully considered.

Yeah, I don't buy the "but I own it, so it's better" argument. When it comes to media delivery devices like cable boxes/DVR's, leasing is by far the better way to go. The way HD is growing and changing, spending $700-$1000 on a DVR that is already or will soon be obsolete is just stupid. It's already been reported that this HD-DVR Tivo unit will NOT be able to receive any new DirecTV HDTV content because it lacks the necessary decoding hardware, so what good is it to "own" it?

I'll take my $7.95/mo. DVR and swap it out for the new model whenever one comes around. Already Scientific Atlanta has a HD-DVR/DVD recorder down the pike that cable subscribers will be able to swap their DVR's out for. I shudder to think how much it would cost to "own" it.

I think renting is the better option since the box will eventually break or become obsolete. When either of those things happen, you just get a new one from the cable company. You will have to have the directTV box for over 6 years before it will pay for itself.

My first DirecTV system was $950.00 back in the day. I was so happy to get off cable I was happy to pay it.

Our cable here in Honolulu , is awesome and less expensive than DISH, as we cannot recieve DirectTV here.

9.95 a month buys me a HD DVR, which can record one HD signal while im watching something else.

At that rate as the above post stated, it would take almost 7 years

I wanted one of these boxes but just couldnt justify the price. So instead I dumped my DirectvHD and went to cable for the $9.95 a month HD/DVR. I figure waiting just one year paying $10 a month to cable will save me hundreds if I do decided to buy an DirecTivoHD unit.

I would love to get back to DirecTv but for now cable is the way to go

Best Buy has them for the same price beginning mid-week (5/17 IIRC).

True. No word yet on how DirecTV is going to handle exchanges on the HD-Tivo receiver.

I spoke with Direct TV yesterday regarding the upgrade of HD content to mpeg4 and he said since most equipment is software upgradeable, that there should be no problem...I don't know if I but that

The problem I see with this logic though is DirecTV is no longer working with Tivo and going their own route with future dvr's. So it would be questionable about future Tivo support if the hardware is even capable... Just some more food for thought

He was talking out of his butt!! The HR10-250 will not do mpeg4, so buying this is quite risky. There are rumors that Directv will either do a swap, or offer a discount towards the new mpeg4 units. As of today though it is just a rumor, so you are spending $700 for something that may obsolete in a year or two.

Having said that, if you do take the risk, you can lower your cost another $250, because Directv has a rebate on these units. That makes this a pretty hot deal!!!

It looks like they haven't updated the site, but if you check the weekly ad, you will see they have a sale on satellite receivers. Best Buy also has it for $699.99 now, but you have to check their weekly ad to see it.

Exactly. The problem is, Directv's mpeg4 capable HD DVR isn't ready yet, however mpeg4 locals in the top 12 markets are right around the corner(ie. about a month or so away). Thus people will have no way to record their locals in HD, until the new HD DVR is released(which will NOT be Tivo based) and their shiny HD Directivo will be useless for these locals.

Looks like YMMV with Best Buy. I went there today, and it was still $999.99. I told the girl that it was in the latest ad, but she didn't believe me, and they were out of the ads, and their online system was down. I didn't feel like driving to the CC that has one in stock.
