Proportable.com's owner posted on his site that Hitachi is short on the 7200 rpm drives and will be until June. I was surprised that Dell is still offering them but I guess they just ran out of stock as well.

H-P has also stopped selling them on any laptop. Apparently they are a power consumption problem and a heat generator that really works against the mobile processor concept.

And - the only ones that are available are Hitachi - and apparently they are not good. I have two of them - and they are AOK once I got them out ofmy laptop. I am using them in external Firewire drives for data only.

I would believe the shortage of drives before I would believe heat/power consumption problems. The Hitachi's have been around for quite a while and are used in a LOT of laptops, mobile & DTR. So how about NO?
Regardless, Seagate is coming out with their high capacity 7200RPM drives in May, so hopefully those will pop up in OEM's.

Why not just call Dell and ask why?

I'm running the 7200 in my XPS2, I ran it in my 9100 and also my 8200, that drive is definitely not the hot spot on my laptop. The hot spot for me is the graphics card when kickin Splinter Cell Chaos Theory at 1920x1200. Skeet Skeet.

They're definitely hotter and consume more power than your slower laptop drives. That is just the way it works. They don't have to be *the* hotspot in your laptop to negatively contribute to the overall system temp, you know.

I've got two of the buggers in my laptop, he. It isn't the heat or power that bugs me, it is the increased vibration compared to slower drives.

Wow, thanks for the info. If the heat from a 7200rpm drive contributes enough heat to cause a problem, you are buying the wrong laptop.

Let me put it clearer for you, My hard drive does not get hot and it is a Hitachi, you know.

HP will not give you the option to upgrade/buy an item if it's not available/low stock. When the ZD8000 came out I wanted a 100 gig drive but their website didn't list it as an option, called them up and they explained it be available in 1 week and then the option would be listed....
so, probably the case here

I have a spare 60GB 7200rpm drive that I would like to sell. Used very lightly for tests only (I work for a laptop hardware review site). PM if interested.
