Hulu announces $9.95 subscription plan

I'm not sure I would subscribe to their new plan unless it offered a lot more content. I use the service , but not a lot.

Hulu, the popular online site for watching television shows, plans to begin testing a subscription service as soon as May 24, according to people with knowledge of the plans.

Under the proposal, Hulu would continue to provide for free the five most recent episodes of shows like Fox's "Glee," "ABC's "Lost" or NBC's "Saturday Night Live." But viewers who want to see additional episodes would pay $9.95 a month to access a more comprehensive selection, called Hulu Plus, these people said.

Meh, the only reason I use Hulu is to catch up on shows that I missed the past week. I don't really have an need to pay for tons of back episodes.

I'm not excited by this, but if they provide FULL seasons and expand the selection it's not a bad deal. Pulling a random example out of my ass...
Say you want to watch 30 Rock but you want to start at the beginning. Legally, you can wait for reruns or go out and by the DVD, which would probably cost around $15 a season. If you could pay instead to watch the entire thing on Hulu at a fraction of the price...why wouldn't you? You'll also gain the ability to watch or catch up on other shows.
This assumes Hulu would provide more content to paying subscribers and that you watch enough TV. If you only keep up with 1 or 2 shows then this probably isn't worth it.

If i can watch the last 5 (i usually just need the last 1) for free, i see no need to pay for it as it is now. although, there are a few shows on there that I would like to watch from the beginning and I can't.

Also, there are a lot of shows that I do want to watch but are not on Hulu. if they add more shows i might consider it.

2ch audio is ugh.

If you have a paid plan, you most definitely shouldn't see any damn advertisements on the site. The above issues also need attention.

If I want to watch something from ABC, I just go to abc's website. 720p streaming of every single episode for a show, that's just nice.
At least, that's what they did with Lost. Not sure if the other shows enjoyed the same presence with every single episode aired available for playback on the site.

Or you could get a $10 Netflix account and rent the DVDs that way or possibly stream them.

Unless they substantially up the content they offer and lessen advertising, I think it won't go over well, as you can pay Netflix the same amount and get even more content and be able to rent DVDs.

Comparing Hulu to a network's website is stupid. Most run terrible and you have to install extra shit. They also have the worst handling of audio I've ever seen, the volume jacked up and commercials are even fucking louder. Hulu simplifies things a lot as you don't have go to multiple websites either.

2 channel audio is fine, especially since surround sound audio on most shows is a complete joke. Not to mention why waste the extra bandwidth on audio when they're just going to compress it and make it shit anyways?

Also, there is a difference between officially announced, and rumors. Not saying it won't happen, but as far as I know, nothing official has come from hulu.

A lot of shows they already only have the last 5 episodes only. So it sounds like the premium service will include things than haven't been included before. So people can still get the same amount of content for free that they do right now.

That's not a direct comparison though. With Netflix you're getting them delayed. That is fine, but obviously the companies feel there is a monetary value to being able to view it earlier. Want to see it earlier, you're gonna have to pay or put up with ads.

In fact, Netflix just recently inked a deal that they have, I believe a month delay in getting movies from certain studios (there's a bit more to it than that, but just using it as an example of the value put on time of release).

If they had all seasons/all shows ever, and a LOT more movies/high quality...i'd be all over it @ $10 a month. If they released shows a day after they are aired, I could drop my DISH TV, and move to HULU all together.
