http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/29/hulu-plus-announced-ipad-iphone-sony-and-more-on-board/

We've just received word that the premium Hulu service we've heard chatter about for a while now has just become official. Dubbed Hulu Plus, the $10 / month service will feature entire seasons of shows that are available in limited quantities on the free service, as well as other programming not available via Hulu on the web. There will be iPod and iPad apps available (streaming with WiFi or 3G), along with support for Samsung connected TVs and Blu-ray. Also in the works is support for TVs and Blu-ray players from both Vizio and Sony (fall 2010), PS3 (July) , and Xbox 360 (as part of Xbox Live, early 2011). Hit up the source link to get in on the "invitation only" preview of the service, and to keep abreast of availability for your favorite hardware. Video after the break.

Its ok, but I'd still take Netflix right now, but then again there's only two or three shows currently on the air that are must watch for me, Its Always Sunny being available for free on Hulu (and I buy the seasons on DVD), Futurama not on Hulu, and Top Gear I torrent (since its BBC). I guess I did watch Party Down, but its on Netflix.

Dang. Was looking forward to hulu on my iphone, but it's not worth the $10 a month.

lets see... i have newsgroups for just about everything i need, yet still have a netflix account. So if i drop newsgroups for hulu plus, i'll save a few bucks a month... it may be worth it since ive gone legit for games because of steam.

And people wonder why I didn't like comcast getting into ownership of universal. Funny how just a week after comcast announced concessions to the FCC to get the purchase approved, Hulu which comcast will own 32%, confirms paid subscriptions.

Yea there will still be ads, no more or less. So for $10 you get less then you probable get using the free hulu and a $8 a month netflix.

If it was $5 a month then maybe, but not $10.

As long as the ads are no more intrusive than they are now, and as long as the free service remains available, it sounds like it's a good alternative to paying a $80+/mo cable bill.

Does Netflix have the same functionality and selection?

Yes. Everyone thinks NF watch instant has poor selection, but it is getting much better, IMO. You just have to look for good movies.

There are lots of good TV seasons tho (King of the Hill, Arrested Development, Archer, etc)

I don't get why there is hate for companies trying to make money on their product. movies and tvshows are expensive, mkay?

How much you want to bet that their will be an announcement that if you use comcast , Hulu gets bundled in with your cable service. It isn't the money making that is the problem. It is who controls the terms of access.

I wouldn't pay $120/year for this, especially when already paying for a DVR.

cut that in half and I might consider it, though.

It is? I thought it was because it's a crappy service to pay money for when there are better legal options.

If you own a service or a product, I think it's perfectly within your rights to shitify it into oblivion. Maybe you need to become less dependent on your TV.

It's probably really only a valid choice for those (like me) who have canceled their cable/satellite tv subscriptions.

Same here. I'm fine with what I've got for free right now, but as already mentioned, if I'm going to pay for something, it'll be Netflix rather than Hulu.

That's not controlling access in my book

Hulu NEEDED a subscription model, doesn't matter who owns them.

I quit watching tv besides the occassional sporting event and a few movies a month. I'd rather do something useful.

How does that = control?

It is putting comcast into a position of controlling not just the route to content but also what content can be accessed. That is what the whole net neutrality debate is about, the idea that some carriers might put their own content above others.

If deals like this continue it could lead to a future where you can only view what your service provides or pay a hefty premium or maybe not at all. Think it can't happen ? It already does . Ask yourself why you can't pay a subscription directly to HBO or showtime to view HBO/showtime streaming at home ? The carriers have exclusivity clauses preventing it. It all started with the C band satellite systems at home and since then has grown more and more restrictive.

I once could buy HBO service through hundreds of resellers. Now I can only get it through local cable or dish/direct unless I want to pay almost triple for the channel I once got for the same price as cable sells it.
