Read the Reluctant Swordsman series by Dave Duncan. It was meh. I find Greg Bear to be hit or miss. I loved his book Songs of Earth and Power, but hated his Mars series. He also tends to be a pulp writer with all the Halo books and such. ut Forge of the Gods was pretty decent. Songs of Kali was meh. Timothy Zahn is another pulp writer. Still I like a few of his works, even the pulp ones. Liked his Terminator prequel book to Terminator Salvation.

Elizabeth Ann Scarborough tends to do more pulp collaborative books. Her solo books tend to be really weird and hard for me to get into. Least the two I tried of hers which were Nothing Sacred and The Godmother.

William Dietz is yet another pulpy writer of super sci-fi military stuff. About on par with David Weber and John Ringo. Everything I read of his was usually decent.

Haven't read anything from the others though. Most of what I see from those books looks to be the "one offs" of mostly pulp writers. By pulp writers I mean writers that stick to very formulaic styles for writing. They are ok and decent enough to read, but nothing great normally. The one offs from pulp writers I tend to find usually are very hit and miss. Although I think Greg Bear is the best of the bunch followed by Timothy Zahn when it comes to writing one offs.

But his novel Eon from the 80s is a classic of the era, given the late Cold War tensions. It's extremely well written, and has a good sequel called Eternity. Another book in that series is called Legacy.

I think Blackcollar was his first novel, it shows but it's still a good read. I also liked his Cobras books, at least the first two. Zahn does action quite well, better than most in fact.
