There was one time that I got bees on the feeder. It was a different design of feeder and I threw it away. The ones I have now the only way to the liquid is through a very narrow tube so no other insect or bird can get to it. I have not really had a problem with the droppings The only problem I have had is it seems every time I try to record them eating they will poop. It is crazy to think that these things live off of sugar, and that is it. We have to eat some much of this and then less of that. These things eat pure sugar.
They would soon starve to death if all they ate was nectar or the sugar water that goes into HB feeders (8oz sugar to 32oz water). They need protein and get it by eating fruit flies. They pluck them right out of the air. They do NOT eat ants, that would kill them. Ants have exoskeletons that they can't digest.

I've never seen a hummingbird in the wild (I'm not sure if I've seen one in captivity tbh) and I'm very jealous! They are beautiful!
They are only in the western hemisphere, Alaska all the way through South America. Something like 360 species. Research reveals that they were in Europe many millions of years ago, fossil records, but there's none now although there are anecdotes. They are specious, there's zero evidence that they are anywhere but the continental Americas.

Research has revealed that hummingbirds are descendants of dinosaurs, 600 pounders! That kind of explains why hummingbirds can be so aggressive in attempts to chase adversaries from their chosen territories, including other hummingbirds, hawks and yes, humans! But AFAIK they will not actually attack a human. They'll buzz you, though!

There are about six or eight out there right now chasing each other around like they're all mad. That's more than I've seen all year. Makes me think it might be the young that have hatched and grown up enough to fly.

We've been awash in the feisty little buggers this past week. A dozen? 2 dozen? Not really sure, but sometimes it's like a swarm of BIG mosquitos...and they challenge ME if I get too close to their feeders.

Dammit!!! Just found one in my pool splashing around furiously. Thought it was a big moth at first. Grabbed a skimmer net and pulled it off to the side were it could dry, but I don't think it's gonna make it.

Since Labor Day, we've gone from 15-20 hummingbirds squabbling over our feeders to just a couple of resident Anna's hanging around. I guess the Rufous (tourists) have gone for the winter...just like our human tourists.

Damn...I don't remember...where do you live?
Most of our hummingbirds have gone on their annual migration. Still a gew Anna's hanging around. They winter here.
So Cal.
I would not mind these little guys moving on. I am on my third 25 pound bag of sugar and filling the feeders twice a day.

I tend to two feeders. I use 1 1/2 cups of sugar to 6 cups of water…I generally fill/ change the liquid every week to 10 days.

I need to put some feeders up, once spring and summer are here I do see them in my yard fairly often, and there's often one posted up on a tree near my deck.
You gotta clean and replace the sugar water every 3-5 days. Otherwise fungus will grow and the birds won't come. Might take a while for the birds to discover your feeders. It took many weeks before my feeders were discovered. Might have had a lot to do with the weather.

Well let’s see. I do 2 cups of sugar and 8 cups of water in my three feeders. As of now I do that twice a day. So that is 4 cups of sugar a day.

It depends on your climate and the temps. Here, a week to 10 days is fine…most of the year. We get a few days in the summer where the juice goes bad/ grows nastiness in less than a week…and the little hummers are quick to let me know.

Yeah, I figure depends on the heat. Last week was cooler so I've gone 5 days last 2 cycles.

I still have one. Just one. I think. I've only seen one at a time and it has no markings. I'm afraid it's a young one that doesn't know it was supposed to be gone last week.

Some species migrate, some don't. I suppose it depends on the location too.

My idea for one way film inside my kitchen window which has a window feeder attached to the outside is helping. They still seem to maybe see me sometimes, but they aren't flying off the moment I move. I can't see them as clearly because the film makes things darker, so sometimes it seems like I'm seeing a silhouette. Even so, that's a lot better than them flying off! I don't get the idea that they are afraid of their reflection. It seems that they don't see their reflection or don't see it as a rival bird.

At the moment it seems that there's 2 birds hitting the window feeder (not at the same time). One's relatively big... and stupid! It doesn't perch while feeding, it keeps flying, backs off 6 inches, comes back and feeds with wings beating, hovering. The other bird feeds at the opposite synthetic flower portal and perches while feeding. It's much smaller. It's the rare HB that doesn't perch while feeding at my feeders. I have 5 now, including the window feeder. I wonder what winter's going to be like. Coldest nights are almost never below freezing.

I was so happy that they started to migrate and I was almost down to only filling 2 feeders once a day. Well word got out on hummingbird Trip Advisor of "places to stop at in Southern California". Yesterday I had to fill all 3 feeders 3 times.

One of the tourists was peeking in the house. We leave our sliders open as must as possible. I raised my arms to look big and keep it outside. It of course flew in the house. Thinking quickly I got a broom to chase it outside. Stupid vaulted ceilings in our our house so the bird just flew higher. Yes it eventually ended up in the skylights. I am getting good at getting them out of the skylights so just got the ladder and grabbed him.

Stumbled across a 'smart' HB feeder with a wide angle WiFi camera and a solar cell to power the camera. Hunnert bux.

Nnnnnope.
