I think it was particularly skillful of the smear team to throw out the laptop subpoena at the same time ongoing tax investigations against Hunter were revealed. That said, it has been reliably reported that the FBI had been doing counterintelligence investigation into Russian disinformation targeting Biden which was being peddled in Ukraine months earlier. As far as I can find, there is no definitive statement about which investigation subpoenaed the laptop in December 2019, but it does seem the smear campaign intended to make it appear as though it were connected to the criminal investigation yet logic would more closely connect it to the counterintelligence probe.

Maybe someday there will actually be something to report about on the laptop or the tax investigation into Hunter will lead to charges or be dropped.
