A 920, 950 or 975?

If its the two latter CPUs then they haven't been released yet, so you won't be able to get them yet. The 950 and 975 will supposedly be released the end of this month (I hope).

The 920 D0 has been around for quite a few weeks, so it should be possible to source one.

Yeah, I meant 920.

Any know specific retailers that will guarantee a D0 stepping?

Lots of places sell D0s now, tankguys, newegg, heck even eBay has a lot of decent priced ones.

Micro center, fry's. YMMV. I think we are close to having them readily available most everywhere.

The question is which ones to look for? and/or is a xeon a better choice

Just curious, what makes you wonder if xeon is a better choice for a desktop?

Tankguys
Tankguys rip you off at $319
Microcenter has them for $199 D0 stepping.
Newegg has been shipping D0 for few weeks now.

I have seen much better results with the Xeon's and they are designed for stability. Are manufactured though stricter requirements theoretically making it a better CPU overall.

I have seen excellent results with the I7 D0's, but seems that all the guys running Xeons are much happier.

I ended up buying a Xeon; wont be able to compare it to a D0, but can see how it does against my C0's.

Are the Xeons the same price?

They say that the Xeons are cut from the center of the wafers and overclock higher.

the Xeon vs i7 thing is probably just like the old A64 vs Opteron thing was... the Xeons are probably the cream of the crop chips that tested out best and the ones that arent up to snuff are called i7's

purely speculation but it would seem to be most cost effective for them...

Not a rip off at all. You are guaranteed a D0 chip, simple. Microcenter is instore only, can't guaranteee a D0, and neither will Newegg.

It's called service, cheap ass - you have to pay for it.

A 60% markup is not service... that is a rip off. Go to microcenter or play the newegg lottery cause the D0 you get from tankguys isn't going to perform 60% better.

Its a $30 markup over Newegg. I ordered a 920 from the egg two weeks ago and got a C0. Supposedly you have a 50/50 chance of getting a D0 from Newegg right now. A 10% markup isn't a bad deal, especially when you stop to consider how much a x58 board costs. The closest Microcenter is 300 miles from here, and for many others like me it is simply not an option.

from what I know, newegg only ships D0 as of last week.
MC is instore, and as long as you know how to read the numbers and alphabets, it's not that difficult to figure out the stepping.

I just hate these non-reputable etailers charging huge premiums for different steppings. It is unethical to sell at different prices.

Uhh... wut? There's no such thing as a Phenom 3. I assume he means Phenom 2, and no, an i7 puts the beatdown on a Phenom 2.

Yes my bad, i meant phenom 2

As far as gaming thoe I believe an 4.8ghz phenom 2 might actually kill a 920 @ 3.6ghz... lets leave aside video and sound encoding... Can that be the case?

I have to call BS on that 4.8GHz number... no way, not even on water cooling.

no, you'd need a cascade. and if you have money for the cascade, you're getting a D0.

Non-reputable? Where on earth do you even come up with this?

... charging huge premiums for different steppings. It is unethical to sell at different prices.

And you base this statement on the fact that you have a comprehensive knowledge of the wholesale costs, CC processing fees, shipping, labor, insurance, market competition, etc - so you know what the "correct" price should be, thus allowing you to make an informed and intelligent cometary on end user pricing, right? I mean, I'd *hate* to think that someone would make such a statement without having any actual knowledge at all. Surely that's not the case.
