Anyone on the beach of the East Coast (especially NC) going to be affected? Sustained winds are now 145mph (Cat 4) and it's projected to hit Cape Hatteras@135 on 2am Friday. Luckily this hurricane is going to run parallel to the coast if models prove correct.

A hurricane warning has been issued for the east coast of the US from Bogue Inlet, North Carolina north-eastward to the North Carolina/Virginia border, including the Pamlico and Albemarle sounds.

The hurricane watch has been adjusted northward and now extends from the North Carolina/Virginia border northward to Massachusetts, including Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket.

A warning means hurricane conditions are expected somewhere within the affected area, with the first tropical storm-force winds within 36 hours. A watch expects the same within 48 hours.

I've been following it on Accuweather.com's forums (great place if you're into weather).

I'm near Baltimore and it doesnt look like we'll feel any effects at all. The Outer Banks of NC, Eastern Long Island and Nantucket/Cape Cod need to pay close attention to Earl.

Most of the East Coast needs to pay close attention to Earl. The only thing you know for sure about a hurricane is you just don't know.

Looks a lot like Hugo that hit very near where I am.

Beaches from NC to MA will get lashed with big waves regardless of how close the eye passes, so that's certainly something to consider.

In north central CT and the rain bands should hit us tomorrow afternoon/night. A lot depends on how far west it tracks as the weather guy said there is a warm front pushing east to barely keep it out mostly to sea. But he said if the front even stalls slightly on its way it could allow the hurricane to move even further west.

I'm around Raleigh, and like Pepsei, there will be a mob cleaning out grocery stores of milk and bread......go figure. No rain in the forecast, just a bit of wind (20'ish mph)

Well they did say there's another tropical storm following Earl, so not sure how Raleigh is about flooding but you can guarantee that there will be flooding on any coastal plain areas.

Well, I live in Maryland but have a beach house rented for a week in Southern Shores, NC starting Saturday 9/4. I was super smart and declined the hurricane insurance so I can't get a refund...

They issued a mandatory evacuation order for visitors for all of Dare County. So now I am now debating on what to do. I don't know when they well let visitors back in. I don't know how bad it will really get in that area of the Outer Banks. It looks like only tropical storm force winds will hit that area if I am reading the maps correctly. However, it is pretty close to the beach so who know about flooding etc.

So my current plan is to wait until the storm passes and make some calls to the rental company to see when we can get in, if there is power to the property .... and if it is still there. :'(

eastern nc here....some places further east are evacuating, even if the eye doesnt get that near land theres going to be a loit of wind and rain and storm surge on the outer banks.

im a little bit inland, were under no warning but the river will rise quite a bit and i expect 50mph + winds and some rain, even if the eye steers mostly north up the coast. if thats all we get then thats not bad at all. if it comes closer to the coast the outer banks are gonna get raped

I'm headed to OBX the first week in October. I wonder if my "ocean view" house will soon be "waterfront"

I'm kinda hoping it makes a left hand turn, and manages to follow a track where it goes between houses and causes no one any damage. Haven't been whitewater kayaking all summer. It'd be nice to get dumped on a little bit.

Haven't been to the grocery store in Charlotte yet, but I'm sure there is going to nothing left. A hint of bad weather here and it's red alert time.

I wish I was down the shore right now. I love hurricane-generated waves.

Right now Earl is beating the warm front and will likely pass through before the front can arrive to nudge it further out to sea. I'm in southwestern Connecticut and as of yesterday we were just supposed to get brushed with a little rain and some moderate winds. Overnight Earl jogged to the west and now is projected to come a lot closer. We'll probably be spared a direct hit, but we're looking at tropical storm conditions for much of Friday. We need the rain, but we could do without the winds.

Have any links to the maps for the warm front moving through? Forecasters said there was a chance of that...

Good luck to OBX, looks like they're going to take it hard. Hopefully it isn't too bad...seems like part of the area had just finished recovering from the last big one four or five years ago.

edit: Was it Isabel, 7 years ago? Time flies. Seems like just yesterday that I was vacationing in OBX and had to evacuate for Bertha...in '96.
