Those fire ants really suck. Hope you didn't get bit too much.

I must have ended up killing 30-40 wolf spiders.

Sort of. If you aren't aware Fire ants grab onto each other in flood waters and form giant floating balls. They then climb onto whatever they find including people.

I hope SciFi channel makes this movie.

And if you live in New England you can freeze your nutz off every winter while breaking your back shoveling snow (OK, so I have a plow guy now - but haven't always). Seriously though, I'm just starting to get some arthritis and it's a total PITA in the winter. Over the next ten years, I will probably come to hate New Hampshire because of the arthritis pain alone. Supposedly, warm, dry climates are da bestest.

there are parts of Florida that are still super safe from even the worst of Hurricanes. Or anywhere, really: just live where you have ~1 mile of marsh land between you and the ocean, and you have a natural buffer to any sort of storm surge or rain water. It works.

I'll trade ya. MD for NH. It's warm, but not so dry. I'd love to have some real winters. My back's fuxxored. If 4x4 and some light shoveling isn't enough to get out, I stay where I am. Being snowed in for a week or two at a time would be great. No work, a fire going, whisky, and quiet. Life doesn't get better than that.

what, you didn't like the blizzard two years ago?

It all went away in two days! Raped by snow, and then it's all gone before I could thoroughly enjoy it. I had to get on the roof to clear snow, or it might have collapsed. If I have to put in that kind of effort, it had better be worth it.

I was snowed in for 1 week+; work closed, streets plowed but still no where I could drive or really walk to. Don't know what you problem was.

Well, Harvey is definitely going to go over the water again. At this rate, Texas should be rid of him on Friday.

Redsquirrel is correct about certain industries. I was also in telecommunications (Verizon NY) in 2001 when the World Trader Center went down. As an essential utility we had easy access past check points and free access throug the NJ crossings (like the Holland, Lincoln or GWB) There were some check points in Manhattan but a show of our ID card got us right thru them. We also had access right around where WTC used to be and to area around 1 Police Plaza (NYPD HQ) since our building 375 Pearl St was next door to it. I finally retired from that in May 2003 with 33 years of service.

Typically there are semi submerged vehicles abandoned everywhere. I wonder how salvageable any of them are ? If flood water is over the struts and springs ? If water has flooded the combustion chamber ? The vehicles where water is up to the steering wheel are presumably write offs for both engine and interior damage.

In other words, don't buy a used car from Texas for the next few years

If you do buy or try to salvage a flood vehicle, expect to repack or replace all the wheel bearings, brake pads or shoes, check if the interior got flooded, disconnect and clean / dry out any electrical connectors that got wet. Water will not get into the engine unless it was running. An oil change would tell you right away. I would not start it until these basics are checked first.

Total write-off

We are a couple of hours north of Houston and the sky is dark and cloudy but no heavy rain yet, just a few sprinkle here and there, not enough to wet the ground.

Oh, and I would not buy any vehicle with water damage, no matter how little damage or how cheap it is. The electricity/computer system would be a nightmare to deal with.

I'm all on the climate change acceptance bandwagon, but how do you look at a random hurricane and determine that climate change is the reason for it existing and/or it's power level?

Hurricanes (and ones of this magnitude) are nothing new - and nor is the concept of hurricane season.

The fact that there was a hurricane is normal
The fact that it hit Texas was normal (in fact, it's been quite some time and we were overdue for one)
The fact that it has done so much damage (at least here in Houston) can be 100% attributed to shitty government with a lack of infrastructure development to handle the amount of water.

Powerful hurricanes are nothing new either, see Great Hurricane of 1900: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1900_Galveston_hurricane

Chuck Norris released an article not too long ago about survival:

http://www.wnd.com/2017/08/do-you-have-the-right-personal-survival-items/

This isnt the greatest survival kit ever, but it gives you an idea of what you should have. I think I'm gonna throw a bunch of useful items in a large duffel bag and stick it on a shelf in the garage. If an evacuation order does come (unlikely in Virginia, but possible) I'll be more ready than most people. All I'd have to do is toss the bag in the car, go right down the road for gasoline, and I'm set.
Mom tells me I should always keep the tank at least half full, mostly for emergencies but also for convenience. She's probably right.

Anyone know how bad things are in the Port Lavaca area right now? I know they were almost directly in the path of the initial landfall of the hurricane.

I think Beaumont and Port Charles are getting it worse than Houston, from a rainfall standpoint. Judging by recent radar over the last couple days. Less infrastructure though.
I see Harvey's headed back out to the Gulf to pick up steam.
Fun times.
Keep it coming Harvey, keep it coming.
