The fact that it has done so much damage (at least here in Houston) can be 100% attributed to shitty government with a lack of infrastructure development to handle the amount of water.
This has been a real peeve of mine lately cause I've been wasting so much time asbuilting stormwater management. Engineers try to fuck with water, and after a couple thousand years you'd think they'd realize they aren't good at it. You can math the shit out of that stuff, and you're still wrong. Your engineering project is a piece of shit 100% of the time. If you manage the water *here*, it means you're fucking it up somewhere else. Water always wins, and it knows where it wants to go.

Building in flood plains, and creating lots of impervious surfaces in flatlands is the issue. I suppose you could blame that on the government that zoned land like that, but it would have happened with private parties too.

Will that affect us at all? Or is that too far away from us near clear lake?

Shouldn't affect us.

Lost power for a few hours. Got it back.
Our Kroger opened up this morning. They are limiting the number of people, so there is a long line to get in.

Our school district is closed until next Tuesday.

So rough rainfall totals from my house.
  • Friday 12 inches
  • Saturday 20 inches
  • Sunday 2.5 inches so far
There were also a few inches Thursday I think.

Well damn. The governor has activated the entire Texas National Guard.

Texas' governor is activating the entire Texas National Guard for search and rescue efforts following Hurricane Harvey, bringing the total deployment to roughly 12,000.
Gov. Gregg Abbott said Monday that it's "imperative we do everything possible" to protect lives. About 3,000 guard members had already been mobilized along the Texas coast.
Abbott says Texas is now activating others who are physically able and not currently deployed elsewhere.
Houston officials say they have rescued more than 2,000 people from flooding in the city. Harvey made landfall on Friday as a Category 4 hurricane.

Shit it's possibly heading back into the gulf and getting momentum going again and heading east. Lake Charles and Lafayette are going to get quite the downpour. Louisiana has dealt with tremendous flooding over the past year of so, looks like we'll be seeing even more.

Paratus is literally under a hurricane empowered by climate change and continuing to drop climate change knowledge. My hat is off to you, sir.

Hey there's not not enough wind to damage my house, we already have food, water and fuel, my kids are basically spending their time reading or playing video games, and there's nothing I can do if that lake over flows so it takes my mind off of things to post here.

same.

If it overflows and gets in my house, fuck it. I have an upstairs.... plenty of food and plenty of water.

I'm just glad I'm this far into it and still have electricity + internet. It's still summer in houston, so I would die without my A/C.

Indeed, you know - it's not even really preparation... I made a hurricane kit like 4 years ago with stuff like canned food... I bet it's all even expired lol. I do however keep 3 sets of bottled water there.

A REAL emergency is when you have to get the fuck out of your home in 10 minutes or less, no time to pack - just grab the most important stuff and go.

As far as being prepared with food/water, I really just overbuy too damn much at the grocery store and Amazon

A good tip though that I will give is having those portable cell-phone battery chargers. I made sure those suckers were charged up to full, and they can recharge my cell up to ~4 times.

Well Dickinson is being evacuated for infrastructure and overwhelmed emergency services. They can't be evacuated far because last I heard clear creek was over I45.

Although maybe it's gone down a bit now.

Seriously, these people are FUCKING stupid to the power of 9000 for making declarations for evacuations... AFTER the hurricane has steam-rolled through the area and is STILL dumping water. No one should be getting into vehicles unless it's from the rescue effort teams (national guard). So I'm going to presume that when they say "mandatory" evacuations, that they are going door to door and helping people evacuate? Either way, still seems stupid. Dickinson is NO small area - and places like George R Brown are already at capacity, so not sure what they are thinking for these people to go.

On my side of town looks like we are at the inevitable point in the day where the rain has paused. Hopefully the next few days (Tuesday - Thursday) are overall a recovery for my side of town, it looks like all the major rain bands are out to the east in Beaumont and Louisiana by now.

I find it stupid in all of this that we didn't even have voluntary evacuations in place. Our mayor seems to want to amaze us with how stupid he is.

United cancelled all flights to and from Houston until noon Thursday 8-31 at the earliest. It will be a freaking mess to straighten things out.

So it might be make or break night for my family and I.

The creek our lake flows into is about 8+ft out of its banks. The weather report is suggesting another 8-10inches is possible tonight. My neighbor who's a volunteer fireman has said they and the police dept expect our lake to go over it's banks tonight.

Now it has drained quite a bit over the last day or so and we didn't flood with 20inches of rain coming down at rates as high as 7in/hr. Tonights rainfall is possibly less than half of that and at slower rates. My side of the lake also appears to be the highest. So will it flood? And if it does will it flood me?

I'm getting tired of this shit.

you're running out of places for all of that water to drain to, so 8 inches tonight is probably worse than 20 inches 3 days ago.

Did they have road blocks up or something?

It's not a matter of whether I evacuated or not - it's about telling the rest of the city. It's pretty easy to tell if your street or area is prone to flooding or not. Unlike other locations, it's not a matter of if the city floods or not - but rather your area.

Let me put it to you this way - my street (and most of the neighborhood) is like an island. Our street will get a bit high, but then if it stops raining for even an hour it will completely recede. Where as, all the streets around us are entirely flooded. We literally cannot go anywhere right now. The point simply being is that some will flood, others will not - and a lot of people simply depend on the media and the city to tell them if they should leave or not.

Same in that it's make or break it tonight. Our streets have completely receded - and our sewers are still running... sooooo can't get any better as far as best chances. Though I'm not going to sit here and act like flooding isn't going to win, It's not hard to take a look around and say that everything is full.

The nearest bayou to me (Sims Bayou) is still in the green and has some space, so I'm hoping we have some reserves to HODOR!
