If this were a disaster movie, somebody would find a way to draw the fire ants to the chemical plant before it exploded destroying them. Too bad this isn't a movie.

SyFi will be optioning this story after Sharknado 7.

ABC News Nightline just ran a story about how people helping others during the storm and the mattress store owner (mentioned above by a poster) was in the story.

You should see Mattress Macks store, Gallery Furniture. It has a cafeteria, a play area, a little bowling alley, and exotic animals.

The place is nuts.

Or, at least the most basic feature of any critical backup generator.
The critical generator needs to be physically well above water level to serve its purpose during a disaster.

That wouldn't do much good if the load it is supplying is underwater.

remember that thing we learned some years ago about building super dangerous factories, like uh, nuclear power plants near constant, guaranteed, natural disaster zones like tsunamis and floods?

oh yeah, that thing. What's the deal with humans not learning things?
You can't expect the French to care about what happens to their properties over here.

It eems a lot of commercial refrigeration is already on top of stuff.

But its like hospitals. It does theme no good if their generators and medical oxygen supply are both flooded.

Exactly, you can only prep so much.
'You didn't prepare for 50'' flood waters by building stuff capable of withstanding 60'' floodwaters? Fail!'
'Your 60'' floodwater protection didn't protect against the greatest lightning storm in history? Fail!'
'Didn't protect against tornadoes properly? Fail!'

Eventually human machinations fall apart, hopefully we're at a reasonable distance from them when they do.

Agree, While you cant plan for everything, at least give critical systems a chance at working by not putting them at the lowest location on the site

Communities had alert systems. But somehow, this risk didn’t manifest itself in the preparation and protection of the backup power for the Fukushima reactors. The backup power systems, the diesel generators for reactors 1 through 5, were low along the coast where they were flooded and failed. They could have been located farther back and higher, like they were at reactor 6. These were clearly failures in design, not an accident.

I was also thinking this. I know those things can be heavy, but why can't they be installed in a reinforced, secured area on the roof?

You shouldn't give out ideas like that for free. Now some jerk is going to make several hundred k pitching that and selling it to the SiFi channel.

Heard from a couple people I know about gas shortages in Dallas now. Refinery shutdowns/damage expected to hurt the entire SE.

Oh and BTW tropical storm Irma in the Atlantic has become a hurricane and is expected to reach category 4 strength by Tuesday.

Saw that. Still too early to tell where it's going. I think I'll fill up the generator just in case.

I'm keeping a close eye on it also. I have some friends in Houston that made it through Harvey by the skin of their teeth. If Irma looks like it's heading toward Houston, I'm pretty much going to drive down from Austin and drag them back with me.

Irma already cat 2 now. Very rapid intensification in a short time. Expected to be at least cat 3 but possibly 4 or 5. Track uncertain so far out.

A Cat 4 or 5 storm hitting Florida or Georgia-Carolinas a week after Harvey is done isn't a pleasurable thought.

We skirted just under Hugo in '89 with no damage. Charleston to Charlotte took a beating though.

Irma now Cat 3 ahead of schedule and it hasn't even hit the really warm water yet...

Anyone in Texas who needs gas for the next few days better go out this second and get it. We're having a huge run on gas on the stations who still have it in San Antonio, and I have read the same is happening in DFW and Austin. I imagine it will really get nasty by 5PM.

I'm really kinda under the impression at this point that most things will be back to normal by about monday/tuesday... it's just a matter of distributors had to stop temporarily and it will now resume (at a much more urgent rate).

I have about 8/10 of my tank filled, and I have no real need to go anywhere other than a grocery store (which I can wait up to 2 weeks on frozen food I have). It's just not worth the hassle for bullshit perceived shortages. If you don't have anywhere to go or anything to do... why do anything?

Apparently there is still a ton of gas in Texas and this is a result of everyone topping their tanks off in a rush. Oh well, I still have 3/4 of a tank after filling up last week.

I just came home from New Braunfels to San Antonio. All the gas stations are packed with long lines. It's crazy out there!
