Politicians don't like to spend money on non sexy infrastructure like storm drain. Public likes to see newly paved streets. This is what happens.

Katrina is really more about stupidity of building New Orleans.

Actually Katrina was really about the stupidity of the Federal Government not properly maintaining the Federal levees. Had the levees held like they were supposed to Katrina would have been a minor event for NOLA.

When you build a levee at ~33ft in the '20s-'30s, there isn't much that can be done to keep it at 33ft, especially when the surrounding area is sinking and stretching further out into the Gulf due to erosion.

There are several stories about decisions made close to 100 years ago that contributed to what happened during Katrina.

In fact, there are much higher levees around Cairo, IL, and the flooding in that area gets so bad, that even the bridges on US 51/60/62 are impassable.

Freaking Verizon drooped the weather channel. Loved watching them during big storms.

Wat! It takes the weather channel hours to convey the same info one gather get from spending fifteen seconds reading a forecast on the NHC website. I was on the Outer Banks for a storm a couple years ago and had no internet. The weather channel was annoying as hell.

Is it just me or has the storm kinda not gone in the direction they anticipated? Originally the path of the storm was to do a loop going towards houston and then going out to the gulf, but based on what I'm seeing it's almost like it's going towards San Antonio?

The storm has stalled, so it's not going anywhere for a few days. This is essentially what was predicted. The loop was always a high uncertainty event, and not all that important relative to how far inland it stalls. Harvey is a large storm, so its precise location is secondary to the fact that it's stalling over the same cities regardless. It's going to be like a college sit-in for the next 5 days.

I guess Pecan Lodge is now the new best in the state

Never been. I guess my #1 is City Market, over in Luling. It's funny, there is a BBQ joint called Luling City Market in Houston that's supposed to be awful, and every time I bring up City Market people tell me how lousy the place is because they think I'm talking about Luling City Market.

I want to try Cattleack that's near me (in Addison / Farmers Branch I think?).
Supposed to be good

Jesus these Gulf storms are just scary in that a depression can morph into a cat 4 in just over a day.

The gulf has very warm water which drives rapid intensification if the tropical system gets organized. With most of the temperature increase from global warming being absorbed by the oceans the gulf ends up having even more energy for storm development.

Yeap, shit just got real yo. We're getting so much downpour that our street is already flooded in less than 20 minutes. It's most likely because it just can't keep up with distributing the water quick enough - so hopefully we get a pause to get some of it out of here before it floods my house....

To put things into perspective... my car is in my driveway - It's currently creeping up my driveway and is at my backwheel. Hopefully it lets up.

9.44 inches.

What's really awesome is when I came back inside after trying to see how full the lake is about 10 spiders ran inside from between my backdoor and storm door.

Went to get the bug spray and there was roach in the garage.

Looks like it's the apocalypse boys.

I know that feeling and it sucks. I can't see these bands lasting to much longer. I hope.

Hang in there.

6.75 inches in one hour since midnight. About 14inches since 10:30.

Our streets are flooded about 1/2 way up our driveway. Our lake is as high as I've ever seen.

There may be a break in the rain band coming in an hour....

I feel for you people catching it right now. I'm hoping that it moves along and weakens rapidly.

So far, this does not look like a Katrina type event. But that was the wind, now comes the massive flooding. I work with loans in flood zones, so I expect we will see come claims.

If Katrina is any lesson, you will flee the state and leave the insured without their protection, and flood insurance gets way way, way worse for everyone.

Only 4 more days to go!

Shit I'd like to go to bed.
