Looks like the Tallahassee area dodged a bullet this time. Lots of wind gusts of 40+ MPH and some rain and just about the whole city lost power for 3-6 hrs depending on location in the city. Many still don't have it back. Guess I'm lucky. No damage for us. Lots of small branches and stuff deposited on the lawn and husband is already out there picking it all up.

You're the one bashing liberals for joking about a storm when you support a party that actively withholds aid from people they disagree with. I've never been against disaster relief, regardless of the state and their political leanings. I do think there should be some thought in whether certain areas should be rebuilt and if they should be rebuilt in the same ways, but I've never wished harm on anyone. I also donate to the Red Cross disaster relief efforts after every major hurricane.

I live 30 miles from Mara-Largo. If a category "5+++++" Hurricane, (or whatever the fuck some LWNJ posted) would hit there it would most likely destroy everyone's property in it's path. It's always illuminating to see a bunch of "compassionate" liberals on this board wishing harm to Florida and it's people living there hoping a powerful hurricane hits a specific area for political reasons. I have very close friends who live in Florida. They are almost family. That being said I have almost no sympathy for anyone who loves in Florida and is affected by this. Almost none. When you move to Florida this is what you sign up for. It's the number one thing on your mind when you move "can I deal with a major hurricane when one comes?" If you move there, you accepted the risk and thus can't expect anyone to feel sorry for you when the thing you were bargaining around finally happens. It's like asking me to feel sorry about someone who moves to Alaska and then gets into trouble with the cold. You'll get a little sympathy from me but not much. People who live in these parts of the country know what they're signing up for.

Honestly if I ran the country, I'd force everyone out of the state and close it off entirely to residential living. Its just a losing practice to spend billions annually rebuilding stuff that was just destroyed last year.

With the exception of Hugo in Sept or 1989 the coast wasn't eaten by a hurricane every year. Just the normal beach erosion, which is corrected by sand replenishment.

I am against the dumb idea of building right up to the coast. I think that should be against the law, but it isn't and they have to pay the price when the storms come.

Should we also write off California due to the fires and mudslides?

You aren't supposed to have to replenish beaches, we have to because we fucked the ecosystem so much.

As said above, yeah, lots of places west of the rockies (as well as desert states) shouldn't have been inhabited. There's a reason they weren't by the native peoples and it wasn't just because they didn't have steel.

The number one thing associated with Florida is hurricanes. I don't have enough sympathy to spare for people who are affected by the number one thing that state is known for. It'd be like someone complaining that new York city is too crowded or something.

At the same time I don't have sympathy for people in Alabama or Mississippi who are affected by racism, Louisiana if you're affected by hurricanes and floods, or Texas is you're affected by gun violence or extreme heat. Also don't give me the excuse that people are too poor to move. Migrants walk across continents. Migrants save up every penny and buy a plane or boat ticket to move (my parents saved pennies for like 1-2 years to afford to move us from a poor country to the US). At the end of the day, Americans can move yet 40% of Americans never move more than 20 miles from their childhood hometown in their lifetime. Even homeless people find a way to move between states (I've worked with these guys. They will find a way even if it's hitchhiking). So yeah no sympathy and were burning billions of dollars in a losing battle vs weather. The weather is not going to get better. It'll just cost us more money to stubbornly keep people there.

If my close friends called, I'd totally help them but I'd still say you were stupid for ever moving to Florida. They wouldn't get any sympathy from me , though I'd totally help out cause they're good people.
