Yea, that was a true monster. Glad this storm won't complete it's turn and get into the gulf or you would have had a Irma as a horrific sequel of Katrina.Hurricane Katrina. 175 mph.

Yeah, they are screwed. Has there ever been a hurricane this big in circumference in the Atlantic?
Just read the Wiki on Ike, "some residents were without power for a month"...YIKES!, and Ike had 110MPH winds at landfall, Irma will be substantially stronger than that plus it will rake the entire state due to it's size. Jesus I just wish these storms would stop, I can see the property value all along the southern US coastal areas drop drastically unless it's a new home built to withstand these monsters.
Hurricane Ike
You overestimate the intelligence of people buying homes on emotion. As long as there are stainless steel appliances (because somehow a $50 stainless steel skin upgrade means the appliance has better internals) and an open floor plan for "entertaining", that home will sell.Just read the Wiki on Ike, "some residents were without power for a month"...YIKES!, and Ike had 110MPH winds at landfall, Irma will be substantially stronger than that plus it will rake the entire state due to it's size. Also here is a live street cam in Key West.

LOL, yea, I didn't factor the "gee, look how close to the ocean we are!" factor. After the generous basting insurance Co's are going to take from Harvey and now Irma, I can see my mortgage payment going up by next year by $100/month easily. Irrelevant is the fact that I'm 2-3 miles from the ocean, (as the crow flies) since every system these days seems to morph into a monstrous nightmare with tentacles hundreds of miles wide. I saw something very interesting on a clip, one dude literally anchored his roof to the ground. He did this by using those nylon straps that trucks carrying pipes/logs use, he had 2 straps on each side with each strap anchored into concrete pilings of some type. I like this idea, since many houses in FL were constructed before mandatory hurricane-straps, (which anchor the truss's into the cinder-block) they are, (like mine), at risk for a roof blow-off in a cat 3-4 storm. His implementation looked affordable and made sense, to install hurricane straps one would need to remove the roof all along the edge, ( really expensive) so no one ever has it done. You overestimate the intelligence of people buying homes on emotion. Mortgage Hurricane requirements might make a difference, if those emotional buyers can't get payments to afford those homes.
I just saw that, and it looks like it's turning EARLY. These damm weather "experts" have been "completely confident" for the last 24-30 hours that this will make landfall in the west and move northward from there. I'm no meteorologist but I saw a most definite northerly turn in the last radar loop.Category 3 now - 125 mph
Storm is hooking northward.

Appears to be a strong steady breeze now, and rain.
Hey! That's my idea! I should have patented that shit :^(JI saw something very interesting on a clip, one dude literally anchored his roof to the ground. LOL!, I saw what you did there!!, I think he's wasted on something TBO. I stuck my head outside my back-yard door during hurricane Frances, (it was a crawler at 4MPH) and just as I did a plastic outside planter whistled past my head like a Roger Clemens fastball. Realizing it was a really BAD idea to do that I stayed inside for the duration. Frances took out my 1st shed that was there when I bought the house, it was a large 12X10 and it wrapped around a big pine tree. Kinda looked like a small plane crash, I then bought an Arrow metal shed for $200, these are a great deal but are really time consuming to build but with the occasional paint touch-up it was doing great until Matthew toppled it last year. I had the optional "hurricane tie-down kit" installed which turned out to be worthless. Why do I keep hearing this in my head
It'll do millions of dollars of improvement. This storm is huge. Looks like Cuba is getting slammed atm. Stay safe my fellow Floridians!
I don't think something like that could be patented since your just using already available common materials. I'll have to check into how the anchoring system was placed, I think 2 straps would be fine, but of course if the structure had an addition you would then need extra straps.Hey! That's my idea! I should have patented that shit :^(
I'd be interested in seeing how it works. I'd use more than two straps though, unless the house is tiny.
I was just kidding about the patent. I'm not a big believer in the patent system. If the idea worked, and I was interested in pursuing it, I'd sell the installation like you would siding or shutters, and compete with anyone that thought they could do it better/cheaper than me.I don't think something like that could be patented since your just using already available common materials.
Well for shi*s and giggles I poked around for a bit and was pressurized to see very little information of this method in use. I did find a guy who branded "hurricane straps" and actually had a working business along with tested and approved design. It seems he is up for someone to license his "brand" that according to him failed because "Partnership challenges led to the closing of the operation and distributorships". Here's the link, http://marketplace.yet2.com/app/list/techpak?id=64573&sid=350&abc=0&page=novelty although I don't see why someone could not come up with their own design and market it without paying any licensing fee's.I was just kidding about the patent. You can patent pretty much anything, and it's screwed me in the past. Whether or not it stands up in court is a different story, but you can still screw people out of money without going to court, at least for a little while.
Thanks for that. I'm not interested in doing it, but am gratified that my off the cuff idea was pretty close to a working(presumably) system, down the spec of 10' spacing which I had in mind :^)Well for shi*s and giggles I poked around for a bit and was pressurized to see very little information of this method in use.
