Thanks for that. I'm not interested in doing it, but am gratified that my off the cuff idea was pretty close to a working(presumably) system, down the spec of 10' spacing which I had in mind :^)

I think the patent's bullshit though. If a dummy like me can think of it staring at a computer screen for a couple minutes, then it isn't a special idea.
The only thing he has right to is the name "hurricane straps" apparently he has registered it as a trademark for that type of system. I'm not sure if it would hold up in court however. I find it odd his business failed considering the other options of homeowners who live in older homes. You can have hurricane straps installed in the traditional method, (installing clips at the truss ends) but it's very expensive. You have to access the truss by either removing the roofing or soffit and that's labor-intensive so few have it done. It would seem to me anyway, that a system you can deploy relatively quickly when a storm approaches and doesn't break your bank account would be a win-win. Who knows, maybe someone will resurrect this idea given the ongoing monster hurricane's we see every year now.

So small so vulnerable. Dang its got an international airport.
Meh, they did a make-over of Daytona's airport (at an eye-popping $42 million) about 11 years ago and then called it an "international" airport. What a joke, there are no direct flights to anywhere but regional hub airports from Delta, AA and Jet Blue. Business is so slow Jet Blue offered $100 tickets to get out of Irma's path, of course you will wind up in Jet Blue's hub LOL.

Less.than.two.hours.of.daylight.remain.for.the.hurri-cam.streams.

I'm interested to see if those boats stay put on the marathon cam.
They.must.be.cinched.up/dry.docked.(whatever.the.nautical.term)--they.are.motionless.

I swear some of my neighbors are idiots, one taped duct-tape across all her windows and 2 others just finishing boarding up just now. I guess somehow they managed NOT to notice the storm is tracking up the west coast!. If I knew we would be facing tropical-force winds max, no way I go through all the hassle.

In the making lemonade-out-of-lemons category, you may have an ocean front house tomorrow.

Good luck man. I am watching the hurricane from California through your eyes.
Naw, I'm 2-3 miles from the EAST coast, the west coast however will be pounded by a 12-foot storm surge and 140 MPH winds at landfall. We do have to be alert for tornado's that often pop up though, when Charley swept through an F1 snapped the tops off 2 pine trees in my backyard. Just before that pine-cone's were hitting the roof so violently I was quite scared.

Here's another good live stream of Key West. The ocean is crashing over already.

Damn, this thing has continued to track west of the forecasts. I would sure hate to see it track a bit further west and hit the panhandle which I have to assume is a hell of a lot less prepared/evacuated. I went to "huricane-con 2" today and bought another 100 gallons of gas, topped off my propane and got all my absolutely must have stuff ready to go just in case it goes way west. They haven't been able to predict this monster very well so far and to hell with taking chances when a real monster might be at your doorstep.

Hey! That's my idea! I should have patented that shit :^(

I'd be interested in seeing how it works. I'd use more than two straps though, unless the house is tiny.

I was thinking after the conversation I had, Helical anchors could very well withstand the forces. They use them for mooring boats and the last test I saw had a tug pulling against it and it broke the shackle at 28,000 pounds of force. They aren't all that complicated or fancy either, just gotta drive them a decent ways into the ground.

It'll do millions of dollars of improvement.

Booo!!! I've been warned about wishing death on people but if you so happened to catch fire, not of my wishing, I wouldn't piss on you to put it out.

Those are real everyday people that you are talking about, I don't give a damn what country they are from. The vast majority of them have no part of whatever it is that makes you not like them, unless it's their skin color and then you are just even more of an asshole.

Yea, that was a true monster. Glad this storm won't complete it's turn and get into the gulf or you would have had a Irma as a horrific sequel of Katrina.

Hurricane Katrina will always have a special place in my heart!

None of the Key West cams are online anymore.

My brother-in-law came up with his wife and kid from the Keys last night and stayed with us. We had lunch today with them and friends of theirs from the Keys that also evacuated. They were resigned to the fact that their houses were going to be brutalized. The only question was how bad the damage was going to be and how long it will be before they could return. It might be at least a week or two. Not knowing sucks.

The first outer band will be hitting our house in a few hours. By tomorrow evening the winds should be hurricane force. Power lines are all buried in my neighborhood and are fed directly from the trunk lines, so as long as the trunk lines stay up we should be good.

LOL, I tend to look at it a bit different, every hurricane is like a living nightmare for me. Frances took SO DAMM LONG to clear out I remember the constant howling like a huge jet engine at full throttle. Then Charley, the "unexpected" hurricane, it was supposed to meander up the west coast as a cat 1 and disappear into the panhandle...NOPE, Charley went from a minimal #1 to a #4 in less than 24 hours then made a hard right turn and busted through the state exiting FL 2 miles from my house. We went on the porch as it moved toward us, (it was 10 PM) and saw huge flash after flash, wife asks if that's lightning, "nope, that our electric grid being destroyed". As it approached it spawned an F1 tornado right over the house, pine-cones hit the roof sounding like gunfire followed by 2 pine trees getting their tops snapped off and landing in my backyard. Sorry, I'm rambling at this point, guess these make me nervous.

Yikes, damm, I feel for them, maybe they somehow still have a standing home if they get lucky. Where in FL are you located at?.
