Heard on the radio ~90 pets had to be rescued because their owners left them behind. Tied off to trees, cars, whatever... What kind of piece of shit does it take to do that?!

Wow, that is horribly fucked up. Not sure what is worse, that they tied them to trees out in the weather versus leaving them inside so they are sheltered from the weather. I guess the only reason they were able to be rescued is that they were able to be seen outside but I highly doubt that was their intention. It would have been better, but still very fucked up, to just let them roam free so at the very least they could seek their own shelter.

There are many small increments between hurricane-con 2 and hurricane-con 1 such as:

Hurricane-con 1.9 is dragging all the wood out of the shed that was used last time I boarded up, checking its condition and cutting any that need to be replaced.

Hurricane-con 1.85 is putting said wood up with the plylox clips (greatest invention ever if you can use them on your house btw) that I already have on hand because I either bought enough last time to have enough brand new unopened, bags or I bought them at the start of hurricane season along with the rest of the supplies you see everyone trying to buy at the last minute. Other than topping off my gas tanks I literally don't have to do any shopping when a hurricane is actually threatening.

Hurricane-con 1.00 is filling my 150qt ice chest filled to the brim with beer, water and a bit of food then lashing it to an inner tube with a rope tied from it to my foot, dogs leash tied to my hand, sitting in a foam floating lounge chair and me wearing arm floaties and a backpack. Obviously that isn't the entire checklist for hurricane-con 1.00 but it's the essentials, so you get the gist.
Yea, those Plylox clips do look good but the previous owner had my house covered in vinyl siding and that includes the window opening's as well. I guess I could try them but I'd be worried that the clips will grab onto siding that might pull free during a gust. Right now I just use Tap-cons drilled into holes in all 4 vectors of the window-frame. After a couple of uses I have to go to a bigger size Tap-con or I'd have ton's of holes LOL. After I take the wood out I calk up the holes, I'm thinking of going with some kind of steel shutters, plywood is heavy and easily warps even if it's covered with Kilz. I also need to replace my fiberglass garage door with a wind-rated one, it's not too bad at $600 installed, this would cut my prep time considerably. Multiple tornado's have already hit and caused damage in Palm bay, these feeder bands will soon work their way up to Daytona later on tonight. These can have 100+MPH winds, although they are short-lived there will be dozens of them as this massive system works it's way through over a 15 hour period. Idiots in Orlando are STILL driving on I-4 and there have been several accidents already. WTF are these idiots doing?, there are ZERO stores/restaurants/gas stations open right now

Meh, they did a make-over of Daytona's airport (at an eye-popping $42 million) about 11 years ago and then called it an "international" airport. What a joke, there are no direct flights to anywhere but regional hub airports from Delta, AA and Jet Blue. Business is so slow Jet Blue offered $100 tickets to get out of Irma's path, of course you will wind up in Jet Blue's hub LOL.
The designation "international" is used when customs will come there to meet a flight, private or commercial.
for years "jefferson county international" up by Port Townsend, Wa was a grass strip

Just lost power for 10-15 seconds and the worst isn't even close to getting here yet. I doubt I have power through the night..

When we were bugging out on Friday there were a ton of convoys of tree crews with bucket trucks, electrical contractors with bucket trucks and military vehicles southbound on I-75. Hopefully power will be restored relatively quickly.

I've heard nothing back despite repeated calls to the people at my house. The power is out for the whole island but they should have their cell phone. Called it, no answer. It's possible the cell tower is down. There haven't been any reports from the island and I've seen no video from it and no reporters have been there.

I'm starting to get a bit concerned... but I still think I'll hear from them at some point tonight. If I don't hear back by tomorrow then I will seriously start to get concerned.

The eye of the storm passed directly over the island. Reports are serious damage to many people's roofs (which shouldn't affect mine at all) and a very large (5-10ft) storm surge... which also shouldn't be a problem except for my car.

They used Daytona speedway as a huge staging area because of it's size, available facilities and being on the east coast. There was a literal army of power trucks from all over the SE. I like this aggressive approach but of course they can't do any work until the storm is over.

I've seen video from the keys and all of it looks like the houses on stilts or "hurricane resistant" houses made out very well. Lots and lots of downed trees though. Is their cell actually ringing or does it go straight to voicemail?

In reference to Paratus:

We had our roof done. Guys did a decent job with the shingles but left a few nails in the driveway. Thought they cleaned the things up but one of them found its way to my tire.
That was a bastard of a dick move.

Anyway, did you ever do something like that?

Usually when utility power fails, they trailer in generators for the cell towers.

We're waiting in Tallahassee to see what our share of the Irma effect is going to be. Hopefully, none of the big live oaks will decide to invade our house. Whatever we're going to get should show up tomorrow.

We do our absolute best not to, including dragging big ass magnets around the entire construction site to pick them up. Unfortunately a few will always fall through the cracks, it's virtually impossible to catch them all within a budget the owner will go for. Virtually everyone chooses the lowest bidder which means that we have to cut money from basically everything that isn't the roof itself which includes cleanup.

3+ million without power so far and the storm is still a Cat 2.
Also it's gone due north since landfall, local forecasters are now saying we will see 85MPH winds later on, it did not hug the west coast as it was forecasted to do.

My mom went with someone who claimed to be the lowest bidder. They put a sign up on our lawn. The advertised price was a thousand bucks less than what they quoted her. She was not happy.

We've been lucky so far, and still have power, but the worst is still yet to come. If the power stays on for the next 4 or 5 hours we should be ok.
Just went through a 70+MPH blast, I heard crap hitting the roof so I went on the back porch and saw a huge flash, a transformer just blew out. I HIGHLY doubt we have power much longer with the new track shift.
