Well we lucked out on the east coast. There are lots of trees down around the neighborhood (including a hefty eucalyptus branch across my car), we lost a few fruit trees that snapped/toppled, a couple roof tiles gone, and a small shed that got torn apart. Not bad considering what this thing was forecast to do. There were a few tornadoes that came within a few blocks of the house but thankfully they stayed away. Hoping for the best for everyone on the west coast of Florida.

Was your garage full??

on CNN about 1:30 EST last night, they had some reporter on CNN that looked like she was gonna be blown off the roof...she could barely talk into the mic because the wind was so string and was holding on the hand rail of the balcony she was standing on...

another reporter was talking about how the winds were blowing the glass globe covers off the street lights where she was standing...

does this make the news reporter more credible when they subject them to these conditions??? I know it is probably just the stations/networks trying to outdo each other but it just seems pretty ridiculous to me...

Was your garage full??

yes and the wife's minivan was in there. her car is more important than mine in an "oh shit" situation as it fits the kids, dogs, and luggage. not possible to fit 2 cars in there.

Any update bud? You probably lost power but maybe you can post from your phone?

Hope all is well!
We are both fine, the house, not so much. At around 4:30 a massive gust or possible tornado pushed over a very large pine tree which landed on the house. It fell across my screened in porch destroying it, the top of the tree hit the roof proper and two limbs smashed through both the roof and the drywall deck in the garage. Needless to say, the noise was beyond terrifying. This is a rather large tree so I'm gonna have to hire someone to remove it, a neighbor who is a has licensed tree business stopped by and offered to remove it for $1,000. I'm gonna wait until I contact my insurance Co. before I hire anyone, I'll go up with my chainsaw and after tying a rope to the limbs protruding into the house, cut them off. Then I can tarp or put some plywood over the hole to prevent water intrusion. Everyone in town is without power, I think 80% of FL is without power, genny is up and running, I have one room AC+fridge and one TV and it doesn't seem strained at all. Luckily I replaced my '70's vintage fridge with a new one just 2 months ago so that's helping quite a bit on fuel consumption. Like you said, "gas is king", I can go about 7-12 days with my current stash, hopefully some gas stations should be back online by then. I'll upload some pics when I get a chance, thanks for asking, this was just the worst one yet, that god-damm track shift put us right smack into the worst side of the storm. Even worse was the duration of the winds, it went on from 8 PM to 9:30 AM, I think that's why so many trees are down. You factor in the rain, (softening up the root attachment) the pummeling winds that changed direction as the storm moved up north and many tree's just can't hang on any longer.

Dude, so sorry to hear that. We were all hoping you would get through it with just some debris to clean up. Thank goodness you have that generator and some gas.

Not to be political, but the only restaurant in town open for business is the Mexican restaurant. We can't deport these people... they're the only ones working today.

So very sorry to hear that. Hope it can be taken care of without too much more drama than you've already had to experience. Having a tree smash our house was my biggest fear with Irma. We escaped with no damage and I sure wish you had as well.

Still no report on the dogs.

Damned measly 30MPH winds blew down a pine on my office power lines. Oh, well, beer thirty...might even be beer AM...

So far the only thing down is a huge limb off one of the trees on to the fence. Looked like it knocked out a few boards.

Get out there with your chainsaw and a pair of oven mitts and get back to work.

Oven mitts don't stop 45KV? Who knew?

Still no word, but I've seen reports that all cell towers are down and there is no way for them to communicate. I haven't even seen any news casters make it south of Key Largo.

I still think they're fine. I'm somewhat annoyed with how CNN has decided they'd rather follow the storm around the country than actually report on the horrible damage done by the eyewall on the lower keys. They have all that disaster to cover but instead they'd rather play in the rain.

Eff there is still power at my house. Plus the generator/gas/anal plugs...etc. GTG here. But BYOB I'm running short.

No lube?! You forgot to stock up on the lube?!?!?!

Edit: Not to mention, how the hell can you be running short of booze already? I keep darn near as much booze as I do gas during hurricane season!

Oh no, quite the opposite, they live for this kind of stuff...they love going out into nutty weather like this. I've heard a lot of them even volunteer for it against the recommendations of the rest of the staff. I have EMT buddies who are the same way...they love going to see the next crazy thing that's happened in town. Job-related adrenaline rush, I guess. In the IT world, we would always schedule meetings for Apple Events back when Steve Jobs ran them. Not quite on the same level as braving the weather, but still fun

My mom is in Clearwater and they just had to clear up a bunch of tree branches in the yard...The 40 year old home held up well...They were really worried about the winds and windows in the home...

It definitely could have been much worse....

Irma will be making its way into Cincinnati tomorrow and into Thursday with rain totals topping 1 inch. Wind gusts will be up to 15 mph. It's going to be tough.
