ABC News Nightline ran a story about the Keys of southern Florida and Marathon was in bad shape. People were trying to get back to their houses in the Keys via Highway 1 but were blocked by law enforcement, could be days or longer.

From what I've seen the media, as usual, has been overhyping the destruction. When damage is shown in the Keys it is almost always a trailer park or modular housing that they focus on.

For the most part Florida dodged a bullet on this storm. Also, I think residents were prepared and ready. Sure, there are some exceptions, but on the whole it could have been much, much worse. This was a nasty storm and Florida weathered it well.

I lost power about 9pm last night. It's still out. I'm glad the portable battery charger I ordered from Amazon came yesterday. At least I can keep all my phones charged while I wait for the power to be restored.

Still no word, but I've seen reports that all cell towers are down and there is no way for them to communicate. I haven't even seen any news casters make it south of Key Largo.

I still think they're fine. I'm somewhat annoyed with how CNN has decided they'd rather follow the storm around the country than actually report on the horrible damage done by the eyewall on the lower keys. They have all that disaster to cover but instead they'd rather play in the rain.

it seems no one can really get there right now, so that probably has a lot to do with the lack of coverage.

Well hurricane insanity is setting in - we went outside this morning to feed some turtles/ducks in the lake behind the house and a neighbor across the lake starts screaming/cursing like a maniac at us (in front of the kids). He called code enforcement a couple months ago due to flood lights on the house that apparently shine into his house. Code enforcement walked around a few times, agreed nothing was shining at him, but we still pointed lights further down just to be good neighbors. Now I have this idiot on film screaming and cursing and acting like a fool. Not sure what's so difficult about just coming over to my house and having a rational conversation. The irony here is that our neighbor's light is the one shining at his house, but o well.

My step mother lives in Jax, nice neighborhood but with equally maniacal neighbors across the canal and on various sides of the house. Previous neighbors across the canal, several years ago, lit a giant bonfire of trash and furniture in their backyard and drove a backhoe into it. Many county officials got involved in that one. There seems to be no limit for this type of behavior in that part of the world.

Speaking of, she holed-up at a friend's house within Jax (some sort of "castle" she claimed) with the dog to ride out the storm. She returned yesterday and apparently the water got up to within 5 feet or so of the house, which is quite lucky. The house is near Jax beach (off of Old San Pablo road, just down the street from Mayo, where she works), and sits on a canal, in the marsh which feeds into the intercoastal, and a boat usually moored in the backyard. Dodged a bullet there as apparently just down the street near Mayo saw some flooding, but living on that marsh has its advantages...as ~unnatural as this particular marsh may be.

Be honest - he found out you trained those turtles and ducks to poop in his yard and were currently feeding them a high fiber diet because the rain washed away that poop away

While I agree about the media outlets love to hype everything for rating, the Keys indeed are in bad shape. Look here, even the US Navy is sending a carrier and several ships to help - https://www.yahoo.com/news/weakened-irma-lashes-tampa-bay-060510202.html

Still no word but I found out the cell towers are definitely down. Nobody is being allowed south of key largo so nobody can go check on the houses. The people in the southern keys are trapped until the cops let people through besides Cuomo and his camera man.

The damage to the island my house is on isn't the worst, but it's close. Lots of downed trees and power lines. Roof damage to anybody who didn't have a metal roof (I did). I'm sure they're fine, they probably headed back to their own houses by now to fix things up.

I am still waiting on a call to find out how bad the damage is to my place. Once I know the damage I'll fly down there to start fixing things.

He is lucky to have a neighbor as nice as you. After that outburst I would most definitely aim the light higher and make damn sure it was shining on his house as much as possible. Hell I'd even find the brightest bulb I could possibly put in the socket and might go so far as to upgrade the socket itself. I can only take so much asshole before I fight fire with fire and I have never been out assholed, I can get quite creative with my assholery.

I really hope you all down in the keys can get it up and running sooner than later. I can't imagine having no house to go back to and then on top of that, possibly no job to make income from as well. That's got to be a really tough spot to be in. And since I'm assuming a lot of their economy comes from tourism they will need to get it ready for that as well.

Jeez, I had a neighbor across the lake like that once. He apparently called the Army Corps of Engineers because our dock was too close to his (it had been permitted by the Corps when it was built 30+ years before), so the ranger came to look one day. There was nobody at my house so my neighbor accompanied the ranger to the dock. The ranger said the guy had called every week for two years to complain...she looked around for a few minutes and left.

I went over to introduce myself to the neighbor and see if we could resolve whatever was stuck up his ass. When he answered the door I stuck my hand out and said "Hi I'm SearchMaster, I live..." but before I could say anything more he growls "I know who you are." When I asked how we could resolve the problem he said "there's nothing you can do, I'm going to get your damn dock taken away from you" and slammed the door in my face.

We never heard from the Corps about the dock. But a year or so later I was down at the dock and he comes down to his dock with his son and grandkids. He starts talking to me like we're old friends, "hey how's it going? How have things been?" I just glared at him.

That wasn't the only time he acted like a lunatic. Fortunately he moved out shortly thereafter.

I hate people who have nothing better to do than to complain about other people's property. For some reason cities always jump on this stuff and create new bylaws. Eventually those complainers get their way. Cities need to just ignore those people.

Hahaha! I have a neighbor that bought a new house that was built in the backyard of the house behind me, that emailed me about my backyard flood light and how it shines into his bedroom, a year after he has been living there.. I nicely replied back saying how I have the same problem. I bought room darkening cellular shades and I've had no issues since. I also told him that I would try and lower the flood light a little but told him that it was for security. Haven't heard back from him but if he complains again, I'll ask if I should start a go-fund me account to buy him some room darkening shades.

what model/manufacturer of room darkening celluar shades? because those are what I have been looking for, and I'm not sure which models really work.
