Holy crap. Congrats man! Especially with that scale of devastation, that has to be a massive relief that your house is still in one piece. And even though a big part of that was making the right building decisions, you probably got a bit lucky too; I can't imagine a Cat 5 would have left things intact like that.

Any guess on how much damage the place actually took? It looks like your roof is fully intact, as are your balconies. So unless the storm surge went higher than the stilts, you may have come out relatively unscathed?

There were 3 trees in the back and one in the front that all look to be destroyed. There will also likely be a lot of water damage to the storage area and the base of the elevator. It is designed with all the machinery at the top so the damage won't be too bad. The 4' metal fence going around the house appears to be gone completely. There was probably a few thousand dollars worth of fishing gear in the storage area that may or may not have washed away.

If none of the windows broke, it's possible the damage could be under $10k

It's definitely reality for those people who lost their homes, be they trailers or otherwise. I'm not sure what your point is. Are you trying to say that the media is faking these pictures you're seeing?
Are you reading something different than what I wrote? I didn't claim anywhere that the media were faking these pictures. My claim is that the media is overhyping things to imply utter and complete destruction by focusing on trailer parks. What do you not understand about that?

One of the people who sheltered in my house's house is completely gone. All that was left was the metal frame from the base of her trailer. These are poor and elderly and do not have the money or the physical strength to rebuild on their own.
Maybe you forgot already, but you were the one dissing your neighbors earlier in this thread for making poor decisions about their housing choices and didn't want to allow them in your place.

Suddenly now you are all about the elderly and downtrodden?

I'm not trying to downplay the destruction in the Keys. It is horrible. I had lunch with my brother-in-law/wife/kid on Friday, who evacuated and has a house in Summerland Key; along with a friend (with wife and 2 kids) of his that had a house in Big Pine. My bro-in-law's house supposedly survived but his buddy's house allegedly lost its roof and was destroyed. They won't know for a week or two when they can go back and inspect for themselves what the extent of the damage is. My wife and I are leaving for vacation in NC on Friday and they will be staying at our house while we are gone and may be staying for a while after we get back, depending on the situation.

I'm just pissed at the schmuck media that continues to show trailer parks that were completely wiped out in the Keys as if that's representative of reality. It's disheartening to those that have places that might have/should have survived, even if the chances are slim.

you sound bitter over something that is both meaningless to you and is, in fact, done in service of people. I don't get it.

You're saying people in trailer parks aren't reality. You're saying they don't mater, they aren't real people. The destruction isn't real when the people aren't real.

Fuck off.

Damn FIVR that is pretty awesome that you have a house on Big Pine Key. I've only driven through it but I've been right by it at Bahia Honda a few times and love hanging out on the south west beach there. Marathon is my favorite spot in the keys though. That's pretty crazy that you could have gotten that you got water front property in the keys for $400k, let alone could have built it for $200k.

The problem is that your post screams of elitism... that you couldn't be asked to give the slightest shit about the peons in the trailer park. The fact that you don't get it (and still don't seem to get it) means it's pretty deeply ingrained in your psyche. For everyone living in that trailer park, that's their neighborhood... their entire neighborhood was destroyed, but in your mind that's not news worthy because it's "just a trailer park".

Shame on you

Don't bother replying, there's nothing you can say that won't just be digging a bigger hole for yourself.

Updated satellite imagery of the keys after Irma, still missing a little bit though.

https://storms.ngs.noaa.gov/storms/irma/index.html?fref=gc&dti=170060086888423

Pretty neat.

It's crazy seeing the resort I was staying at days before it hit. It actually looks pretty intact other than some landscaping damage. There are some palm trees that are tipped over too. And the beach we hung out at (Sombrero Beach) has sand covering the street, and the children's playground is completely wiped out.

Then I look at the housing neighborhoods across from the Marathon airport and you see a lot of rubble. Looks like a lot of trailer or portable homes there and blocks and blocks look to be just wiped out. Sad...

Wow the resolution on that satellite is actually quite impressive. Better than Google's I think. Damage does not seem as bad as I would have figured, it's still a mess and some houses are gone or even just toppled but most of the stuff seem to still be standing, even what appears to be silos. Figured those would get ripped and tossed like a chocolate bar wrapper. Either way still sucks for everyone that lost property or sustained serious damage. I'm sure even the houses/buildings that appear intact on the images probably have serious structural damage to them.

I guess on the morbid side, these are good for temporary job creation in the construction industry, I suppose.

Any update bud? You probably lost power but maybe you can post from your phone?

Hope all is well!
Hey everyone, 1st I'd like to thank all of you who were rooting for me during this terrible event, it really meant a lot to me. I got power back yesterday and my internet went down Tuesday PM so I couldn't log in. 150,000 still without power in Volusia county alone so color me surprised when it popped up last night. I had just came from the garage with a pot of boiling water to clean my skillet for taco's when I realized the light above the sink was on!. Now for the ugly part, the tree/roof /porch situation, I managed to tie a rope to the limb that had penetrated the roof the cut it off and extracted it. I then tarped off the hole(s) and used roofing nails to secure it. Still waiting to hear back from my insurance Co who I contacted via email Tuesday, I can't handle removal of this brute since I only have an electric chain-saw that is incapable of this size job. Then I'd have to figure out how to handle the logs and get them too the front of the house. All this is beyond what my 60yr old body is capable of doing even if I had the proper equipment. Here is a pic of the tree and the roof penetration, (which has been removed), any thought's/input's/idea's??.

WOW that is a big tree! Glad nobody was in there to get hurt by it! Best of luck to you in the recovery effort.
Thanks, in reality I got lucky, I was "sneaking" out in that porch to see WTF was going on during the storm 3-4X. Had I been out there when that bad boy called it quits I would have been killed. With all the howling+ the screen's filled with water I would not have known death was seconds away.

I don't think he expected this much damage. His trailer is gone (it's just a debris field) and you can see his audi as the largest "structure" on his lot.

The damage to the neighboring canal (avenue E) is even worse. There is a series of 5 or 6 houses that are now a parking lot and you can see a huge pile of debris maybe 200 yards down. It looks like a tornado came through that area.

You can tell the two people staying at my house are OK because you can see 2 or 3 open windows and a towel hanging on the bannister on one side of the house. There's no way a towel would be drying there after the hurricane unless they were ok.

Isn't the land value crazy high there? I wouldn't expect to see trailers in the same neighborhood as your house...

I may consider renting it later if it falls out of use and I need the income. Right now it's used as a vacation house and my brother also uses it. I had planned to spend christmas there with the rest of my family and my brother's family.... but I'm not sure that's what we'll do now that it requires so much work.

I should've known how easy it would be for people to locate it from that picture. I would prefer to keep my personal info to myself which is why I said Pidgeon Key. If anybody had been from the keys they would easily have known I was lying about that.... because Pidgeon Key has zero houses on it. It's a visitor center in the middle of the 7 m ill bridge.

Sorry bud but the cats out of the bag now. I'll be crashing your Xmas so make sure you get extra food and I prefer whiskey but honestly will drink anything 80 proof, thanks in advance!

Ouch, that is one hellofa tree, really glad that no one was hurt! I'd do exactly what you are doing now, waterproof your house to the best of your ability and wait until you can get professionals to do the rest. I hope you ran the tarp up and over the ridge (high point) of your roof to stop water from creeping under it. If you still get small drips you can get some plastic roofing cement and run it along the edges of the tarp. Personally I think that you'd very likely end up doing more damage trying to remove that behemoth of a tree yourself versus just waiting on the pros. Even the pros might have to let it just drop??? I'd start calling and scheduling them and roofers now even though you are still waiting on insurance, I'm sure they are going to have quite a backlog.

OTOH, if you did survive you would have one hellofa story to tell and it would only have cost you 1 pair of underwear

I used a bead of caulk under the tarp but now I see where you're right, I should have brought it over the top of the truss. Luckily the main truss was undamaged (I'm not sure about where it lays against the one side though). It appears the porch helped break the fall a small amount. Yea, as for the tree I'd think the route to go would be to cut it where it's resting and let it roll off from there, the porch is already totaled so no issues in that regard. i was quoted $1,000 for the tree and I think that's actually pretty fair.
