Very, very fortunate. This is a major issue on our side of the State as 99% of the debris in Broward (Fort Lauderdale)/Palm Beach is still sitting alongside the street and might not be picked up for months at this rate (notwithstanding that we're in the most active part of hurricane season). The reason is that most towns here have contracts with debris haulers at set rates, with FEMA reimbursing them something like 75 - 90%. The problem with that is Miami does not have set rates, meaning that towns in Miami are offering 2x - 3x more than the set rates. Thus, every tree hauler in the State is now working in Miami because that's where the money is (and the towns don't care because FEMA is paying for most of it).

It's an eyesore and a danger to have piles and piles of debris everywhere you go. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like it's getting picked up anytime soon because... reasons (namely, government sucks).
Same situation here in the Daytona area, another issue is the fire hazard these piles of crap present, all it would take is one moron flicking a cig. out the window to start a blaze going. Last year after Matthew it was 4-6 weeks before they started making a dent in it, so far it looks like Maria is going to head away from FL, (hopefully!) because if you took 100MPH winds and add in all the piles of debris laying around the result would not be good to say the least.

Good on you for keeping a sane head, because honest to goodness that sounds like hell. I can put up a lot, but sewage? Yuck. When water goes down the hole, I expect it to stay down the hole.

It's not the water coming back up the hole that concerns me...

Sorry, been very busy. Some screening on the Lanai will have to be replaced and we lost two downspout extensions. They're somewhere in the county but I've decided not to go and look for them.

----snip---

Glad to hear your property made it through relatively unscathed! Yeah, things will take a while to get back to normal and at first glance the cleanup seems impossible. You just take it one step at a time and make sure you do everything safely, you survived the worst of it in relatively decent shape so don't go getting yourself screwed up now!

Just wait until the refrigerators start coming out of the houses, oh my god you have never smelled such a putrid and unholy smell in all of your life as a nicely stocked fridge that hasn't had power in a week or two. Some people think they can salvage them, trust me, you can not and will only put yourself through olfactory hell in a vain attempt. The smart people under NO circumstances open them, just duct tape the fuck out of the sonofabitch so it can't possibly open and hand truck it to the curb. It generally takes the city a bit to figure out how to pick them up so they are out there for a while.

On a tangent: Whole of Puerto Rico without power:

https://www.reddit.com/r/news/comments/71cm5a/whole_of_puerto_rico_without_power/
I'm from Puerto Rico born and raised and I can tell you this is the absolute worst thing we as a country have faced. The country is completely devastated, without power and with a lot of areas completely flooded since hurricane Maria not only brought 150+ mph winds but also a record amount of rain. I have been very lucky in that the apartment I live in resisted the winds with the help of wooden panels but a lot of other people had to evacuate cause of the winds blowing up the windows and glass sliding doors.

I think the worst thing of all was the sound of the winds, just a horrible screeching noise that will probably haunt me for a while. It just felt like being in one of those horror movies where the monster kept banging the door trying to get in. Here is a short video of that experience.

Hurricane Maria screeching

Ah man...that video gives me flashbacks to living through hurricanes in Florida:

More videos, daaaaaaang:

Texas got hit, Florida got hit, PR got hit, west is on fire...I'm going to stock up on supplies here in NE just in case we're next

Hey we got hit by Harvey back on Aug 26th and there are still piles of debris in some areas.

Some neighborhoods were hit so hard the debris removal trucks make it about 30 yards before having to leave and dump their loads.

The shit coming back up, the shit concerns me.
LOL, yea, I'd be concerned about my poop making a sequel the next day!. My insurance agent arrives tomorrow, hopefully that goes well. craig's-list is festooned with tree removal ad's, one I found quite LOL, "Fireman with a chainsaw", this dude claims he's a fireman and seeks to "help" people out with rock-bottom tree removal prices. Of course he has no license+no insurance as are most that are running ad's.

Yeah, hard to blame people though. There is a much needed service and they can make a few bucks in the process. I do understand your apprehension of hiring someone without license or insurance but luckily you have a choice, many do not.

I might have considered hiring someone without lic.+ins but in this particular situation the tree is resting on the house so if yet more damage occurs during the removal process I'm sure my insurance Co would tell me, "your bad, had they been insured their carrier would have been responsible, not us"..

No doubt, in your case I wouldn't dream of hiring a non-professional. But most people don't truly need that level of expertise so like I said, people need it and money to be made.
