Nice haul. We went out last weekend and got some tuna/dolphin. It gets nuts when you're in a school of dolphin and everyone is running around the boat with a fish on. I don't expect to be back on the water (unless you count the water coming into the house from a missing roof) for a while.

Not looking forward to seeing most/all of my fruit trees gone after this blows through.
That would suck. Stay safe. Unlike most here, I love visiting Florida and hope you guys get lucky down there.

There's a fine line between brave and stupid.
"Discretion is the better part of valor."

My sister and partner talked to me a couple years ago, wanted me to join them in move to FL. I was thinking, FL?? No way. All those swamps and mosquitoes? Gotta be mosquitoes there. Now, with these monster hurricanes coming in every two weeks I have to think living in FL is insane. Here a monster earthquake could happen any second. The USA has been too cheap to install an early warning system. I'm so disappointed with the USA, I can't tell you. They have all this money and they just waste most of it, aren't forward looking. It's disgusting.

And by 'nuts' you mean 'fun as shit!' right? I was the only one in our group of 6 who actually fishes so it made it even more fun but everyone had the hang of it by the end, including having to go over/under each other.

2 of the 4 people who are sheltering in my house have decided to evacuate. The other 2 are staying. I'm sure they'll be fine.

They could have evacuated and I told them to. They thought it would miss until yesterday (as did I). They are old florida people who are dumb and old. They don't understand weather.
You're never gonna get rid of the old people smell

I let them stay at the house. They're retarded and I told them to leave but they call my house "the fortress" because they saw it under construction and they have nowhere else to go. But don't tell anybody at P&N that.

Watch them get hurt during the storm in your house then turn around and sue your ass. That's how America works these days.

IMO, that is asking for trouble.
Get the emergency personal to go over there and take them to a proper shelter.

No shit... I wonder if he has a fax machine that he could fax a hold harmless to and have them sign it and fax back to him?

Ugh. Enough with the legal fear mongering. They'll be fine.

The house is 100% ICF construction. It's a fortress. They'll be fine.

I'm worried too but I tried over and over to convince them to leave for a shelter. They believe that Miami shelters are in more danger than the house.

I've known them for decades. I don't think they'll sue me for offering them shelter.

dolphin as in the mammal dolphin? Isn't they're like very big animal? One should be enough for a very long time?

Assuming when he said 'got some' he meant 'had them show up'. Fishing dolphin is illegal (not to be confused with dolphin fish which are tasty tasty). Dolphin do, however, do a great job of herding fish for you.

You're a good man. Your neighbors are either insane or idiotic, but you're a good man.

Another thing, is it just my or did anyone else think that the storm surge from this beast would be higher at landfall?
I suspect the north hook is going to make a difference. Irma is going to be turning almost 90 degrees, so unlike a straight run where there's days and days for the surge to build up, there's a lot less time for Irma's Florida landfall.

I just saw some pictures of the mass exodus out and couldn't help but wonder if they are still charging tolls to leave?
No. They're suspending toll charges. And Atlanta Motor Speedway is offering free camping for Irma evacuees. They opening up the facilities so people will have access to hot showers and restrooms. They should be able to handle thousands of campers since they're used to people camping for Nascar events.

Pics?

(And if anything, I'd assume they're charging extra! )

Was flipping channels and saw on Fox all the cars leaving (4 or 5 lanes) and on the other side of the toll booth it was a trickle of cars. So it appeared they had to stop, but the pictures could be from a few days ago I guess.

Oh, that is a very good point.

Finished up with boarding everything up today, making that damm wall to close off the garage is a huge PITA. Can't trust the contractor-grade, '70's fiberglass door for any type of wind-rating and if that caves in your toast. It's anchored on all 4 quadrants with Tapcon bolts using jumbo steel braces. Since the storm's track has changed yet AGAIN I've decided to ride it out, projected sustained winds are predicted to be around 70 MPH with gust's to 85. The bad side of the "up the gut" track is power outages will be so widespread it's going to take a LONG time to get everyone back up and running. I have no idea of what the grid distribution's wind-tolerance is, if it's not that great we may lose power even well before the system rolls into the central FL area.
