Naples Update

Just got some good news from a neighbor that rode out the storm. She walked around our place and the only damage is a screen in one pane on the lanai that has come loose on two sides.

There are some trees down in the development and the water feature by the entrance has a little bit of water over the road. The highest wind speed recorded in the area was 137 mph.

Power is out. No surprise there. We now have to wait until the storm passes through the state before we can head back. We must also wait for gasoline to be distributed because I would imagine that those that left after us gobbled up what little was left. It was tough finding gas stations with gas on the way out. (A big thank you to GasBuddy)

The surge they are saying locally has broken up and should not be an issue but they are waiting until high tide coming up at 3AM before declaring the danger over. The surge is what had me most worried. It's hard to believe it could have reached in as far as us but what do I know about storm surge?

Some bullets were dodged.

I also heard second hand from some Marco Island residents that they came through pretty much unscathed. Trees down, power out. But they hadn't traveled around so damage could vary throughout the island.

Great to hear, most of us here in Daytona were lulled to the "west coast storm" track but Irma had one last trick up her sleeve, it went due north after landfall and is now bearing down on central FL, doubt our power holds up past 12:00 if that far..

Getting steady winds of 40 with gusts to 65 and it looks like the really unhappy part of the storm is moving right at me. Power is still on but cable/internet went down. Good job Comcast.

Now using my phone as a mobile hotspot.

Maybe now is not a good time to be near windows?
I wasn't near it, the limb was just that big!, windows are all boarded up anyway. Just lost power for about 15 seconds, doubt I'll be posting much longer.

In reference to Paratus:

We had our roof done. Guys did a decent job with the shingles but left a few nails in the driveway. Thought they cleaned the things up but one of them found its way to my tire.
That was a bastard of a dick move.

Anyway, did you ever do something like that?
Re-shingle a roof?

No. With Ike some co-workers and I got up on the roof and put tarps over the missing shingles.

Turned out everyone in the subdivision who was roofed at the same time lost shingles with winds 45mph and above due to a manufacturing defect. They never bonded to each other and just zippered off.

For Harvey not many people had roof damage in the Houston area. Only the ones who were clipped by a tornado. None of the folks I helped had that problem.

In the 60's my cousins lived in Bradenton Beach off Tampa, literally across from the ocean. The front side of their house was on stilts. It was their house, then a tar road, and the ocean. I can't imagine how that area took the storm or how it looks today. Back then it was a small sleepy little town of sorts but now I'd expect luxury homes or condo's along the shore. I remember traveling a long bridge to get from Tampa over to Bradenton. Haven't been to FL since way back then 1965, just a widdle kid. First time I experienced the differences between society and race. Laundromats side by side with signs labeled WHITE / COLORED.
I wondered who would want to go next door just to wash their colored clothes, then my Aunt explained it to me. Being from the north I was shocked at that southern culture. And 1965 wasn't exactly the best time for a family with northern license plates to be traveling thru Tennessee and those southern states considering the rioting and up rest going on at that time. The Summer of 65. Shacks with families looked exactly like something from the movie The Grapes Of Wrath. Who could live like that, I thought. Hurricanes & memories....

Well we lucked out on the east coast. There are lots of trees down around the neighborhood (including a hefty eucalyptus branch across my car), we lost a few fruit trees that snapped/toppled, a couple roof tiles gone, and a small shed that got torn apart. Not bad considering what this thing was forecast to do. There were a few tornadoes that came within a few blocks of the house but thankfully they stayed away. Hoping for the best for everyone on the west coast of Florida.

I'm in a pretty rural area of North GA so what's left of Irma is headed our way later today. Thankfully (for us) the track seems to be heading west of Atlanta so instead of 40-60mph winds we'll probably have 15-30mph. Trees fall constantly with heavy wind and rainfall/ice so power outages are pretty common.

My son and I spent much of the day Saturday rebuilding the carb on our generator and now it's running perfectly (he even superglued the air nipple on the fuel pump back together - a new one is coming today). My wife is panicked that we're going to have a dozen trees fall and destroy our cars and house.

Just when I thought I was getting a new neighbor. Irma effed up.

Sounding like the middle keys are in really bad shape

http://bbsnews.net/2017-09-11/islam...t-by-hurricane-irma-pretty-devastating/128963

The mayor of a Florida Keys municipality said the damage left behind by Hurricane Irma has "been pretty devastating."

Islamorada Mayor Jim Mooney said there is widespread damage to the popular vacation destination.

"The storm surge appears to be much greater than we expected," Mooney told Local 10 News late Sunday night during a telephone interview with Local 10 News.

Mooney said the island resorts "took a tremendous amount of water."

"We were watching waves coming into resorts," he said.

Mooney said the northbound lane of U.S. Highway 1 was washed away.

"It's pretty bad," he said.

Mooney said he didn't know of any possible injuries or deaths because of "spotty communication." He said he hasn't even been able to get in touch with his son.

The mayor said he stayed in his concrete house when Irma's eyewall approached the Keys as a Category 4 hurricane. He said his boats were destroyed by trees that fell on them, "but nothing we can't replace."

Mooney said he expects "six months solid" for people just to get halfway back to normal.

"Maybe halfway back to normal," he added.

Mooney said tourists may be in for a rude awakening when they visit the island chain.

"It's going to be a shock to people who are used to seeing lush tropical settings of the Florida Keys," he said.

Mooney said Irma "snuck over here a little bit closer to us than anticipated, but that's what hurricanes do, unfortunately."

He wasn't sure about the extent of the damage to the other islands, but he spoke briefly with Marathon's city manager, who said the marina was destroyed.

At least now you have some free fruit woods for grilling and smoking. I finally got around to using the peach tree I trimmed and it's good stuff especially on pork and chicken wings.

My mom went with someone who claimed to be the lowest bidder. They put a sign up on our lawn. The advertised price was a thousand bucks less than what they quoted her. She was not happy.

I'm confused, how can someone claim to be the lowest bidder? They either are or they aren't and the only one who knows if they are is the one receiving the bids, in this case your mom.
