Public schools canceled for the 3rd straight day tomorrow due to the storm. 15-20% of the schools in the county are still without power. This is in metro Atlanta where we only experienced the tropical storm Irma and not the hurricane.

Congrats bud! That's awesome for you and wasn't that kind of expected of your neighbors house?

I don't think he expected this much damage. His trailer is gone (it's just a debris field) and you can see his audi as the largest "structure" on his lot.

The damage to the neighboring canal (avenue E) is even worse. There is a series of 5 or 6 houses that are now a parking lot and you can see a huge pile of debris maybe 200 yards down. It looks like a tornado came through that area.

You can tell the two people staying at my house are OK because you can see 2 or 3 open windows and a towel hanging on the bannister on one side of the house. There's no way a towel would be drying there after the hurricane unless they were ok.

Yeah. The center house that is 3 stories tall and looks undamaged is mine. There was an "L" shaped trailer house about 10 yards to the left of my house... that was Bruce's house. His audi is now the only discernible object on his lot.

I could've had the house build for 200k (same size and everything) but I spent over 400k to make it ICF concrete so I wouldn't have to rebuild after another hurricane. It appears it was worth the extra investment.

I'm going to be flying down there at some point in the next month to do repairs. I will wait until they get power and sewer and cell service to the area because I need those amenities.

ouch:

All customers who lost electricity on the eastern side of the state will likely have power restored by the end of this weekend, Florida Power & Light said Tuesday.

An FPL official told reporters at a Broward County news conference that of the 790,000 customers in that county who lost power, 330,000 had their electricity restored Tuesday.

The company is focusing its efforts first on schools, hospitals and other critical infrastructure. Gas stations and restaurants are next on the plan, the official said.

Customers on the west coast of Florida, where Hurricane Irma made its final landfall, will likely have power restored by September 22, the company has said.

He had a nice newer Jaguar in 2011 parked next to the little trailer home.

You have a lot of space in your house. 5 bedroom with 5 bathrooms at 3300 sqft. Renting out portions of it? It sticks out on Zilllow as much as it sticks out in that aftermath photo. It certainly is better built compared to the neighboring structures.

I may consider renting it later if it falls out of use and I need the income. Right now it's used as a vacation house and my brother also uses it. I had planned to spend christmas there with the rest of my family and my brother's family.... but I'm not sure that's what we'll do now that it requires so much work.

I should've known how easy it would be for people to locate it from that picture. I would prefer to keep my personal info to myself which is why I said Pidgeon Key. If anybody had been from the keys they would easily have known I was lying about that.... because Pidgeon Key has zero houses on it. It's a visitor center in the middle of the 7 m ill bridge.

I just looked at Zillow and I don't know what they're smoking, but it's not worth that much. Maybe half that.

It's a big house, but nothing special.

Now you're just being modest. You're doing alright. At least from what I've seen.

The damage to the rest of the houses on the canal is catastrophic. My neighbors audi is now in his front yard and his house is gone completely. It looks like a bomb hit.

#1 - yay your house survived!

#2 - hey, Big Pine Key! I went camping there once. Crazy little Disney deer eating out of your hands...

While I agree about the media outlets love to hype everything for rating, the Keys indeed are in bad shape. Look here, even the US Navy is sending a carrier and several ships to help - https://www.yahoo.com/news/weakened-irma-lashes-tampa-bay-060510202.html
I'm not trying to downplay the destruction in the Keys. It is horrible. I had lunch with my brother-in-law/wife/kid on Friday, who evacuated and has a house in Summerland Key; along with a friend (with wife and 2 kids) of his that had a house in Big Pine. My bro-in-law's house supposedly survived but his buddy's house allegedly lost its roof and was destroyed. They won't know for a week or two when they can go back and inspect for themselves what the extent of the damage is. My wife and I are leaving for vacation in NC on Friday and they will be staying at our house while we are gone and may be staying for a while after we get back, depending on the situation.

I'm just pissed at the schmuck media that continues to show trailer parks that were completely wiped out in the Keys as if that's representative of reality. It's disheartening to those that have places that might have/should have survived, even if the chances are slim.

It's definitely reality for those people who lost their homes, be they trailers or otherwise. I'm not sure what your point is. Are you trying to say that the media is faking these pictures you're seeing?

One of the people who sheltered in my house's house is completely gone. All that was left was the metal frame from the base of her trailer. These are poor and elderly and do not have the money or the physical strength to rebuild on their own.

Just saw his house on an ABC News video feed..look at those lots around the neighborhood...complete rubble, yikes:

You can see the towel hung by the people on the side banister in this photo. It's white and hanging down from the 2nd floor on the left side of the house. In the video it's clearer but that's how I can tell they're alive and OK (along with the open shutters/windows)

Holy crap. Congrats man! Especially with that scale of devastation, that has to be a massive relief that your house is still in one piece. And even though a big part of that was making the right building decisions, you probably got a bit lucky too; I can't imagine a Cat 5 would have left things intact like that.

Any guess on how much damage the place actually took? It looks like your roof is fully intact, as are your balconies. So unless the storm surge went higher than the stilts, you may have come out relatively unscathed?

Fivr's joint looks like a drug lord compound.

People used to run drugs out of these very canals back in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Since then it's mostly been taken over by cartels who use go-fasts and submarines but occasionally you still hear about stuff floating around in the water.

I bet you those cartels are running boats non-stop while the coast guard and military are occupied with relief efforts. Risks are way down until they get power and surveillance and those airports back online.
