Some gas stations in Memphis are running out of gas. I just left my local station downtown, and they have nothing, no premium or anything. I just talked to a friend who was able to fill up this morning, he said the price of regular went up 50 cents/gallon while he was in line (up to 3.15/gallon). I am a little worried, as I only have a qtr tank left, but I work at home and have a fuel-efficient car. But I know others are not as lucky. I've stocked up on a few days worth of food/water/cigarettes and am hoping this is temporary.
About 90 miles from Memphis, the same thing is happening in Tupelo. Some local stations are out of gas, but I was able to feel up this morning just before the price jumped another $0.20.
The local newstation said not to worry, as tankers are on there way. But, a coworker told me this morning that's not the case. Power is still out in Meridian, MS, and the tankers can't load without electricity. He said he could be as much as a week before we get more.
I've got a close friend in Jackson, MS, and he says the lack of gas is really a problem down there. According to him, 90% of the stations don't have gas, and they are unsure when to expect more.
That certainly sucks. I am trying to figure out if I should keep driving around trying to find a station where I can fill up, or just squeeze my qtr tank for a week and see if things get a little better. I don't want to waste what I have now, but I kinda hate to wait, too.
There is plenty of gas in Memphis, but people keep rushing to the pumps and they can't get new shipments out fast enough. It seemed like every other car I saw was also filling up some type of gas container as well as the car.

I know that I?m happily sitting here in my cube at work in NY with no real understanding on what is going on in New Orleans, but from what you see online and on TV, it doesn?t seem like our Government is doing all it can do to help the people.

I'm guessing this is a rumor gone out of control.

The word is that in Jefferson Parish and Orleans, FEMA has "bugged out." They haven't brought supplies in.
THE REAL MILITARY IS NOW FLOWING IN. National Guard is being replaced before our eyes. Watch the feed.
Word is that the Marines are at 1515 Poydras where our OC4s are. I think we're coming back online in force shortly.
On another note: I've just been told that we're being monitored in Iraq! To all the troops there, from one soldier to another, we're hanging tough here and you hang tough too. No matter what you're hearing, we love you guys and want you to know that we know how hard you've got it. Stay strong!

What you have to remember is that it's not just New Orleans that's affected. Southeast Louisiana, Southern Mississippi, and Southwest Alabama were all deeply affected. You've got places like Slidell and Biloxi that are arguably worse off than New Orleans. Towns like Waveland, Mississippi were completely destroyed. There are many other towns out there that were in the path of Katrina that are just devastated as well. You just don't hear about it because the area in and around New Orleans were the most heavily populated.

I hope terrorists are not seeing this moment in time as an opportunity to cause more trouble. With a lack of resources, especially gasoline, right now, the United States is another disaster away from complelely falling apart.
