I'm watching O'Reilly right now and they have horaldo (sp?) outside of the convention center. It's an absolute mess there. They are saying 30k people are there.

There is police and security forces there and it looks like some sea stallions from the navy just flew in with medical crews to setup a triage. They need those people out before dark... um its getting dark now, this will be bad.

Greetings from the Evacuation point of Dead Orleans.

I am in that building across the street from where you see the helicopters landing and taking off and the thousands of people lined up along the Interstate.

Officials are using this as base camp as well. I have spoken to an Officer that he said he has seen at least 3 thousand bodies.

I just got a Cell Site up here so we are a beacon in an Island of Dead.

I have never been to war but I do not have to go because being here I see what it is like.

I cannot believe this has happened. It is beyond surreal.
Which building is that and how did you get back in?
It's the Galleria building, isn't it, Dave? Or next to it?

I think this is it:
http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=29.99452...152521&spn=0.012199,0.015431&t=h&hl=en

That's where Dave and I met for the first time...parking lot of the Marriott Courtyard next to the Wyndham (formerly a Westin, I think)

And there are hundreds of school buses underwater because the mayor wanted greyhounds...

Geraldo Rivera, on FOX News, is hold children up close to the camera pleading, "LOOK AT THIS CHILD, LOOK....THIS IS NOT POLITICAL SPIN, THIS IS NOT REPUB/DEM.....LET THESE PEOPLE GO! LET THEM LIVE, LET THEM WALK OUT!"

Geraldo was sweating, at the verge of crying.

He and Shepard Smith are schooling Little Lord Hannity.

Give me a sec.
I-10 Causeway exit. I believe they're using the cloverleaf overpass for shade/shelter. Which bridges are you inquiring about?

I'll also try to see if I can locate the Causeway exit on the NOAA maps, but they're kind of a pain to work with.

I really wish my CD with 1m resolution satellite imagery of NO in 2000 wasn't damaged...it's got a freaking scratch and I can open the 350MB TIFF. :|

sweet, just the info i was looking for.

what is the condition of all the bridges on this map. i know that most of the twin bridges on the right are destroyed.

Fox Reports: NG not allowing people to leave Convention Center

Geraldo reporting that the National Guard has locked people inside the convention center and are not allowing them to cross into neighboring Gretna. Geraldo broke into tears and told Hannity to knock his spin off that people are dying and it is worse than "Willowbrook". (the mental hospital of death in Staten Island that he exposed back in the '80 that made his career)

Locked in the Conv. Ctr??? WTF? These people have been calm all week according to an MSNBC reporter who's been out there for days, too.

it's still intact, but they're limiting traffic on it to emergency vehicles until they can do a full inspection to make sure it wasnt damaged

The old span was shifted pretty bad and needs repair.

The newer span is OK but they will keep it for Emergency traffic only.

What I don't understand (and it's because I'm not there to see for myself):
How can it be so calm in this walmart as shown in this video and people are calmly walking through the store picking up non-essentials while people a few blocks away are dying? I don't agree with looting for luxuries but I don't see a problem with people looting for water and food. Have these stores already been drained of all of their food and water supplies? Are people just not thinking to go and get them but are, instead, just waiting for someone to bring the supplies to them?

The people in this video didn't look hungry or thirsty.

someone just said that if there are any busses at the superdome they need to be re-routed but i didnt catch where to

listening to the scanners really shows how disorganized everything still is down there. everyone seems to have a different idea about where the busses are and should be going and how many there are.

Yes that is where I am. It is now dark and the helicopter ferry is still on.

We just brought up the cell site facing the evacuation site and every channel went busy immediately.

Do you work for the cell provider that has equipment on the same floor that the University of Phoenix has an office on?

WTF?!?!??!

http://www.redcross.org/faq/0,1096,0_682_4524,00.html#4524
Hurricane Katrina: Why is the Red Cross not in New Orleans?

* Acess to New Orleans is controlled by the National Guard and local authorities and while we are in constant contact with them, we simply cannot enter New Orleans against their orders.

* The state Homeland Security Department had requested--and continues to request--that the American Red Cross not come back into New Orleans following the hurricane. Our presence would keep people from evacuating and encourage others to come into the city
.

Encourage others to come into the city? WTF?!? Why would anyone go INTO the city knowing it's underwater and has no food/water? If they're OUT of the city then they have access to food/water!

Something smells worse than what the Superdome must smell like!

The Governor screwed the pooch on the National Guard movement, the Governor is in charge of the state's NG forces last I checked. What about the General in charge of the National Guard? What the hell is he/she doing right now? We have tornadoes all the time here in Kansas and the Kansas National Guard is there almost immediately. There were a number of planning and coordination failures here and it seems to me that the primary problems reside with the city and the state itself. My perception is that the mayor and the Governor sat back and waited for the feds to show up and when they didn't they started bitching. All the while, they were providing no leadership with regards to their local resources and government bodies to make things happen. The capital of Louisiana is Baton Rouge, right? How bad are they affected? Why isn't command and control coming out of there? Our government is a tiered command not unlike the US Army. If the General dies, the Colonel takes charge. If he dies, the Company Commander takes charge. If he dies, the First Sergeant takes charge and down the line it goes. There were failures all along that chain of command, and they start at the top of the Louisiana government.

If for one single second a member of the LA state government went to their own home and ate or slept or talked on the phone to a single family member NOT affected by this, then they have failed as an elected official, pure and simple. Too many of you are intent on blaming someone and your hatred of our President and his staff shows through like a spotlight through a napkin. I'm here to tell you, there should be a number of elected officials at the state level and within the National Guard who are reprimanded, admonished or otherwise impeached for this action. There's a reason this is called the United States, each state stands on it's own, but are united for the cause. If the state can't stand on it's own, that's the state government's fault. I'm am sick and god damned tired of the blame game. I've laid out the list of people to blame in this disaster and that's the last I'll speak of it.

I said it once and I'll say it again, the state is the one fvking up here, period. The General in charge of the Louisiana National Guard, in conjunction with direction from the Governor are failing these people. It has nothing to do with FEMA or the feds at this point. The Governor and his government are flounding at every turn. I can only hope that someone will come to listen to my message here.
