Now reporting 3 firemen and 3 police officers are trapped on the Bellsouth building roof in New Orleans East...dehydrated...have been shot at.

Houston Mayor Bill White (found elsewhere):

"We want this exhibition hall open right now," the mayor said. "If it entails somebody suing us, OK, sue and explain to the American public where money is more important than lives," White said. "This is an emergency and the people of this region will respond in appropriate fashion."

Bill White said tonight that he wants every available apartment and hotel/motel room in America to be made available to the displaced people. It's a national emergency and people should not be expected to stay in shelters but be given any and all available housing and afforded the dignity they deserve.

Geraldo asking God to bless everything (Army, Navy, America, his moustache....)

I thought I said "Finally!" before but it seems like THIS is the FINALLY we've been waiting on! *5* days later.

I've tried to follow this thread from the beginning but there is a good chance that I've missed a page or 10...

I was wondering if anyone knew anything about the condition of specific portions of the town? I've been to New Orleans a couple of times and am not overly familiar with a lot of the references to various parish names and never did get a handle on what exactly was the Garden District/French Quarter.

Does anyone have specific information on the condition of the normal tourist traps? I can visualize a lot of the area within a couple of miles of the Royal St. Charles Hotel, down to the casino, over to Bourbon, and somewhat remember the area around the WWII museum. I remember taking a trolley to some burger place and I believe most of the trip was through the French Quarter though I cannot remember for sure.

I figure that the majority (80% under some level of flooding, right?) of the city is in shambles but I guess I just want to know how the places I remember are doing.

French Quarter is essentially untouched and wasn't flooded at all (it's at or above sea level, actually)...maybe a bit of looting and some broken windows. The Central Business District largely escaped the flooding but there have been a couple of fires and I'm sure there are plenty of broken windows.

WWLTV.com forums has info on people seeking people and damage reports:

You may have to back up a level.

Saw on Nightline last night the condition of those who were "rescued" and living under the underpass and in the convention center, awaiting further help with no food, water, medicine, etc. Absolutely terrible. What the FVCK is the government's excuse. "We're trying to allocate funds," WHAT HUGE BULLSH!T.

WWL: A teenager died and eight other people have been treated for carbon monoxide poisoning after two Houma families ran generators inside their homes to power appliances until power was returned after Hurricane Katrina.

The worst deaths are those that are the most avoidable.

Fin, here's a story on the condition of several landmark/important areas in NO, it should answer some of your questions.

It looks like there are some lucky refugees out there, they get to take a cruise.

WWL: Federal officials are chartering three Carnival Cruise Lines ships for six months to provide shelter for Hurricane Katrina evacuees.

And even in the blight of the ruins of New Orleans, the circle of life continues. Overheard from a police scanner early this morning: Need a medivac for a female about to deliver a child.

Hospital evacuations to proceed
http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/09/03/katrina.hospitals/
NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (CNN) -- Evacuations at some New Orleans hospitals were expected to proceed Saturday, while conditions at the city's largest public hospital were reported to be deteriorating further.

As of Friday night, more than 200 patients remained at Charity Hospital, CNN Senior Medical Correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta reported.

The hospital has no power, no water and no food. Some patients are on ventilators being worked by hand pumps; the bodies of those who have died are being stored in stairwells, as the hospital's morgue is flooded. Two patients died on a ramp while waiting to be evacuated.

The public health situation is worsening, and some chronically ill patients are lacking their medication.

"We are trying as hard as we can to get them some help," said Charity's Dr. Ben Deboisblanc.
All that senseless, unnecessary death.

WWL: Governor Kathleen Blanco has declared a state of public health emergency.

This will allow medical professionals from other states to quickly start working in Louisiana in spite of the fact that they're not licensed there.

Good to know due process will remain in effect.

Gov. Blanco has also brought in former FEMA Director James Lee Witt to assist in the efforts. Talking of using Eglin AFB.
