Good work you guys. Thought I'd just let you know I'm checking into this post several times a day.
My sister at 55 has been a nurse for 32 years and she can't belive whats happening in NO.
I made her sit down and read the last several pages of this thread. She's going to email
from work monday some of the links you good ppl have posted to those that might need
to know. She is upper management for a large HMO, works medical case review. She's hot!!
Awww...bait and switch!Emotionally hot about whats posted, she thought I was pulling her leg.
It may be getting to me. I get PISSED as hell when I see people on TV or in msg boards blaming the victims for "choosing" to stay behind. As the '04 election polarized this nation between right and left, it seems this tragedy is polarizing the nation between the compassionate and the callous. The latter saddens me greatly.Looking back on History, Warren G harding comes to mind concerning very poor appointments.
US Grant is a runner-up for poor appointments.
FEMA is not a political plum job. A political plum job is dog catcher.
Staying up to date on this is getting me down, don't know how you guys can do it
but Bless you that you do. Thanks,
GalvanizedYankee

French Quarter is essentially untouched and wasn't flooded at all (it's at or above sea level, actually)...maybe a bit of looting and some broken windows. The Central Business District largely escaped the flooding but there have been a couple of fires and I'm sure there are plenty of broken windows.

Fin, here's a story on the condition of several landmark/important areas in NO, it should answer some of your questions.Originally posted by: Fingolfin269
I've tried to follow this thread from the beginning but there is a good chance that I've missed a page or 10...
I was wondering if anyone knew anything about the condition of specific portions of the town? I've been to New Orleans a couple of times and am not overly familiar with a lot of the references to various parish names and never did get a handle on what exactly was the Garden District/French Quarter.
Does anyone have specific information on the condition of the normal tourist traps? I can visualize a lot of the area within a couple of miles of the Royal St. Charles Hotel, down to the casino, over to Bourbon, and somewhat remember the area around the WWII museum. I remember taking a trolley to some burger place and I believe most of the trip was through the French Quarter though I cannot remember for sure.
I figure that the majority (80% under some level of flooding, right?) of the city is in shambles but I guess I just want to know how the places I remember are doing.

WWL: Governor Kathleen Blanco has declared a state of public health emergency.
This will allow medical professionals from other states to quickly start working in Louisiana in spite of the fact that they're not licensed there.

Thanks for the info. BTW, I wonder if CNN is reading this thread? I swear this wasn't here earlier today when I asked my question!

OH YEAH... what all of the displaced people need is a 1-800 or 888 number they can call in to - like a call center - in order to let people know where they are now and leave all of their information with these call centers so we can start connecting people with family again.
This along with all of the databases would really make things come together faster for these people. If someone could urge AT&T, Sprint, or MCI or ANY company that has the resources to set up a call center and air the numbers nationwide i'm sure they could get primetime slots donated from the networks - it would make a huge difference.
Yeah...this tragedy is stretching patience even of those of safe in our homes.Originally posted by: PG
Sorry, I'm just getting cranky because I want to see help getting there faster.
Thanks for the updates. This is honestly about the best place on the web to get information right now.
Crap, I wonder if that's the Bundy road data center building. I used to work there.Originally posted by: conjur
