When did she have time to issue a statement?

Last night she caught a Broadway show. Today she was shopping for shoes in Manhattan!

All Things Considered, September 1, 2005

· Days after Hurricane Katrina made landfall east of New Orleans, thousands remain stranded in the city, many without food or fresh water. The city's mayor has issued what he called an "Urgent SOS" for help.

Heavily armed National Guard troops evacuated people from the squalid conditions of the damaged Superdome; the evacuees are being bused to the Astrodome in Houston.

But it has now emerged that people stranded at the New Orleans Convetion Center -- about eight blocks away from the Superdome -- are in dire straights, lacking basic essentials and avoiding corpses and waste on the streets.

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff is overseeing the biggest recovery operation in U.S. history. President Bush is proposing $10 billion in relief for the area.
In this interview Chertoff kept avoiding Robert Seigel's reports of NPR reporter at the Convention Center. Chertoff kept saying people should go to where there is food and water that has already been delivered (HOW THE F*CK ARE THEY SUPPOSED TO KNOW? THERE'S NO POWER!)

yeah, this is unbelievable!

you don't let 10,000 people die b/c some obviously mentally-challanged idiot decides to take pot-shots at their help of all people!

the greater good would be to cancel that a$$hat and continue helping those that have followed directions and deserve to recieve aid!

*edit to add... i really didn't believe anyone was shooting and am about to read this article - however, if someone was shot i was obviously wrong and would never expect anyone to die in the course of saving others. yes, people put their lives at risk all the time to save others but it seems they could have handled dealt with this jerk and pressed on with helping those who needed help. i also understand that this is easier said than done but it's my take on this at this point.*

Is it possible that the "shooter(s)" could have been shooting in the air to alert the helicopter that they were there. Kind of like an SOS signal? Yes, it's a stupid way to get noticed, but it would makes sense

Possible but unlikely.

The Oakwood Mall was apparently set on fire. I read a report of a ferry pilot being shot. Cops have been shot. The bodies of two teenage girls were found in a street, shot.

Well, I made my monetary donation to the Red Cross.

Does anyone know if the New York Blood Center will be assisting the Red Cross with blood? Should I look for a Red Cross donation center?

In her press conference tonight:

"I have 2 issues to talk about.

#1 300 Arkansas guard troops just back from Iraq are now in New Orleans. They are under my orders to restore order immediately. They are armed with M15s and are trained to use them. They are battle tested. They will restore order. The people who are interfering with our attempt to help the people of New Orleans will no longer be tolerated. We are expecting the other troops that I have DEMANDED soon.

#2. Dennis Hastert said today that we should not rebuild New Orleans. I DEMAND an apology, and I DEMAND it immediately."
There ya go, Governor! Kick some ass, seabass. Order needs to be restored so the evacuations and rescues can proceed safely and the levee breach repairs completed.

Where did you hear that from -- WWL I assume? I've got a good friend in Jackson who basically told me the same thing today (see my post a few pages up).

Wow, that's the way to get things done. They need some leadership.

I was told today that West Memphis still has gas, and plenty. I also was told to go late at night to avoid lines. So I am heading over the bridge tonight into Arkansas country to see if I can fill up. Wish me luck

Isn't there a gas refinery/distribution center in or around Memphis? Based on that, I wouldn't think a gas shortage there would ever be a problem.

It's towns in the damaged areas in LA, MS, and AL that might be in trouble. As already mentioned, Jackson is apparently running low. With the distribution centers that deliver to the stations down, where else would they get it from?
