Not directly related to Katrina, but for those that need to buy pet supplies, PetBlvd.com is donating all profits for September to the Red Cross. Prices are good on their site and shipping is fairly fast.

Adding to the uncertainty Friday morning was a large explosion in the city's railroad district, possibly from a rail car.

Authorities were trying to get a hazardous materials team to the area, a police officer told CNN. The officer said he believed the team could reach the area by vehicle since the water there had receded.

He said he believed "several cars blew up," but it was not known what they were carrying.

No other details were immediately available.

Explosion in NO:

You guys need to stop watching CNN. They will warp your minds. If you must watch media coverage, watch something a bit more true like FoxNews.

SRT Morning Update: 09-01-2005, 0830

Apparently things in New Orleans were even crazier yesterday!

Chris says that the group traveled to a hospital on an island to evacuate patients that hadn't had food or water for 3 days. Along the way, Mikes team came across people stranded on their roofs with dead bodies of family members lying beside them. Apparently there wasn't much they could do. Once they got to the hospital, Blackhawk helicopters assisted in evacuating the victim's. By 9:00 PM, the group was told to pack it in until tomorrow due to the sunset and the difficulty of landing the helicopters in the dark. This left over 100 patients still at the hospital, including many children who begged them not to leave. Chris said the remaining patients although upset, were understanding. One hugged Chris and thanked him for helping.

Everywhere the team goes, they are protected by armed police. At one point they broke into a Winn-Dixie Store to get food for the team. While they were inside, the police guarded them with guns drawn. When the police took a turn to go inside for food, they gave Dan a glock pistol and Sean a shotgun to stand guard.

Chris said the situation is getting desperate. No one has had food for several days and people are dying by the thousands. Many of the victim's ask the group for food or water as they go by, but Chris says they don't have enough to spare.

They have been eating military rations and working long hours in the hot sun. He also said that there aren't enough rescuers to get everyone saved, even though miles of rescue vehicles were lined up on a road leading into the command post.

Last night the group got 6-7 hours of sleep and will be back at it again today. He thinks they will be down there for several more days. I will get another update tomorrow.

CNN will put anything on the media and pretend it's news. But Foxnews is even worse, all bs.

Riots? Looting...in Baton Rouge? I live a couple blocks away from the River Center and I haven't heard/seen any of that.

Get the facts before spreading your feces across AT, n00b...

I can't watch the local streams at work so I'm using what I can. I've been promoting those local streams myself so a big for you. As for Fox News, go thread-crap elsewhere.

From WDSU:

A series of explosions has rocked the riverfront a few miles south of the French Quarter in New Orleans. The explosion that jolted New Orleans awake occurred in a chemical storage facility near the Mississippi River east of the French Quarter. That word comes from Harbor Police. A series of smaller blasts followed the first explosion. At least two police boats are on the scene.

The first explosion sent flames shooting into the pre-dawn sky. A series of smaller blasts followed and then acrid, black smoke that could be seen even in the dark. The vibrations were felt all the way downtown.

I fail to see what arsony (what I expect this to be) is going to accomplish. What is going through the heads of these people?

Who says it's arson?

Also, I'm not thrilled with some people using the term "ground zero". What is meant by that? That's not typically a hurricane term is it? And NO wasn't hit directly so using ground zero to describe NO doesn't seem correct.

Because there has already been many accounts of arson around the city. There aren't too many ignition sources when all the utilities are shut down.

Ground zero is a military term that designates the impact point of any bomb. It's mainly associated with nuclear explosions, but is also used for earthquakes, epidemics and other disasters to indicate the worst areas of damage.

Basically, for the media, it's a popular "buzzword" and they tend to overuse it.

I knew what the term meant, and I agree that it's an overused buzzword. I'm just getting a little cranky. Keep in mind I am an engineer who has to put up with lots of non-technical people using buzzwords and technical terms incorrectly on a daily basis.

If I hear one more person refer to their computer as the "hard drive" I' m gonna go ballistic.
