Good work you guys. Thought I'd just let you know I'm checking into this post several times a day.

My sister at 55 has been a nurse for 32 years and she can't belive whats happening in NO.
I made her sit down and read the last several pages of this thread. She's going to email
from work monday some of the links you good ppl have posted to those that might need
to know. She is upper management for a large HMO, works medical case review. She's hot!!

Emotionally hot about whats posted, she thought I was pulling her leg.

Looking back on History, Warren G harding comes to mind concerning very poor appointments.
US Grant is a runner-up for poor appointments.
FEMA is not a political plum job. A political plum job is dog catcher.

Staying up to date on this is getting me down, don't know how you guys can do it
but Bless you that you do. Thanks,

Damn...it took so freakin' long...but...it's here and these people will be ok now...I hope.

Now that the evacuation outside my building here at Causeway and I-10 is complete they can fly looking for folks stuck on roof tops again.

We are slowly gaining power and water, yes water is returning.

We are getting quite a few sites back on air as well.

We are coming back.

It will not be habitable for the general public but at least we will be able to re-build the infrastructure.

They are still seeing Ponchartrain tidal swings in the city as the city is part of Ponchartrain now.

At least now people will be forced to believe me that Lake Ponchartrain should not be called a lake. It is directly connected to the Gulf of Mexico with 2 inlets therefore as I have said since I moved here last year that it should be called Ponchartrain Bay.

It may be getting to me. I get PISSED as hell when I see people on TV or in msg boards blaming the victims for "choosing" to stay behind. As the '04 election polarized this nation between right and left, it seems this tragedy is polarizing the nation between the compassionate and the callous. The latter saddens me greatly.

But, then I see video like the helicopter dropping the food and water and I feel like, hey, maybe that bottle of water was bought with my donation.

You may have to back up a level.

Thanks for the info. BTW, I wonder if CNN is reading this thread? I swear this wasn't here earlier today when I asked my question!

Lots of tourist locations still intact...

I was wondering if anyone knew anything about the condition of specific portions of the town? I've been to New Orleans a couple of times and am not overly familiar with a lot of the references to various parish names and never did get a handle on what exactly was the Garden District/French Quarter.

Does anyone have specific information on the condition of the normal tourist traps? I can visualize a lot of the area within a couple of miles of the Royal St. Charles Hotel, down to the casino, over to Bourbon, and somewhat remember the area around the WWII museum. I remember taking a trolley to some burger place and I believe most of the trip was through the French Quarter though I cannot remember for sure.

I figure that the majority (80% under some level of flooding, right?) of the city is in shambles but I guess I just want to know how the places I remember are doing.
Fin, here's a story on the condition of several landmark/important areas in NO, it should answer some of your questions.

Another informative article. Thanks Virge.

Sorry, I'm just getting cranky because I want to see help getting there faster.
Thanks for the updates. This is honestly about the best place on the web to get information right now.

WWL's latest story headline is really telling now that many(if not most) of the people waiting for evacuations have been catered to: New Orleans left to the dead and dying. It's going to be a long rebuilding process.

WWL: Clean up crews can be seen collecting the debris and garbage around the evacuation point at the I-10/Causeway Interchange. There are no more evacuees in the area.

i'm really tired of all the reports of shooting and killing and now the talk of the military going in guns blazing to TAKE BACK THE CITY FROM THE INSURGENCY!

omfg, there has been one CONFIRMED report of a national guardsman being shot and that is after he and an angered refugee struggled with his rifle and it went off. every since the military went in they've been point their guns at innocent people and the gerneral had to order those he could see to KNOCK IT OFF!

going in there inimidating everyone after all they have been through is a sure way to cause some NEEDLESS MURDERS!

these stories have been totally exagerated and now the cops and servicemen are approaching this like a war - totally unacceptable!

using force on looters and drug addicts are one thing but approaching everyone like they are criminals is unforgiveable, especially if you provoke them to the point of anger and retaliation!

i am now about to pray for this part of this RESCUE/WAR mission - hoping no more unnecessary deaths take place!

great job in here guys!

OH YEAH... what all of the displaced people need is a 1-800 or 888 number they can call in to - like a call center - in order to let people know where they are now and leave all of their information with these call centers so we can start connecting people with family again.

This along with all of the databases would really make things come together faster for these people. If someone could urge AT&T, Sprint, or MCI or ANY company that has the resources to set up a call center and air the numbers nationwide i'm sure they could get primetime slots donated from the networks - it would make a huge difference.

Please people

If you know someone or a family that is planning on returning in here, please stop them.

There is no infrastructure here to support sustainable life and there is no gas to get them back out of here when they find out how bad it is here.

Please, please, please, pass the word. Do not come back here until told it is ready.

It is not safe for not only them but they create a further problem for all agencies already stretched to beyond human capacity.

Please, please, please, pass the word. Do not come back here until told it is ready.

Please, please, please, pass the word. Do not come back here until told it is ready.

The work I have been doing here for example is barely enough for Emergency communication and many many gaps.

BTW, NOAA's added more areas to their post-flooding sat. images:
http://ngs.woc.noaa.gov/katrina/KATRINA0000.HTM

WWL reporting that St. Tammany is working on restoring power to critical customers (hospitals and the like)

Now reporting 3 firemen and 3 police officers are trapped on the Bellsouth building roof in New Orleans East...dehydrated...have been shot at.
Crap, I wonder if that's the Bundy road data center building. I used to work there.

Thanks for the NOAA update. I can now find my old house in Metairie. It looks like that area of Metairie survived. The pics are two days after the hit. I don't see any flooding and a lot of trees are still standing. This is the area west of Causeway Blvd where Dave is.

My wife found her Uncle today. Turns out he was a smart idiot. He stayed in NO during the hurricane but parked his car at the airport with a full tank of gas. On Tuesday he hiked 8 miles to his car with a back pack of supplies he'd prepared ahead of time and drove to California to stay with his sons. Didn't bother to tell anyone else in the family. Using mapquest and those satellite images on digitalglobe mangaged to see his condo was dry - two blocks on the opposite side from one of the failed levees. Ain't technology wonderful

Guys, I am going to bed now and leaving for Metairie early in the morning (where dave is).

I only mention this because I may not be abe to chat/answer pm's for a short while.

BTW, I am not going back for a sightseeing trip. My boss has called me (and the beastly truck I am driving) back so we can grab the office computers, filing cabinets, etc., and try to tow some of the service vans out of the flooded area that the office is in.

I am bringing plenty of food and water along with 8 - 55 gallon drums of fuel that are now stashed away in the back of the Great Pumpkin. .

There is the possibility that things are going well in my area. Most of the parish is reporting that the water is turned on (pressure is still low) and my boss says that his electricity was on. I am keeping my fingers crossed that I might be that lucky and will be sleeping comfortably in my own bed tomorrow night.
