BTW, I am not going back for a sightseeing trip. My boss has called me (and the beastly truck I am driving) back so we can grab the office computers, filing cabinets, etc., and try to tow some of the service vans out of the flooded area that the office is in.

I am bringing plenty of food and water along with 8 - 55 gallon drums of fuel that are now stashed away in the back of the Great Pumpkin. .

There is the possibility that things are going well in my area. Most of the parish is reporting that the water is turned on (pressure is still low) and my boss says that his electricity was on. I am keeping my fingers crossed that I might be that lucky and will be sleeping comfortably in my own bed tomorrow night.
So did you ever figure out if it's even legal to drive TGP?

Does it matter at this point?

Tom Benson, owner of the NFL Saints should be tried for treason.

Not only did he move the team to San Antonio but he said no refund to New Orleans Season Ticket holders.

The NFL and this Country better not allow that Team to play.

This guy is lowest of the scum.

Tom Benson's timming could not be worse. A real sucker punch.

Capitalism at it's coldest. The Saints will be stained for a very long time indeed.

Oh, damn.

Did you see the Pres of Jefferson Parish on Meet The Press this morning break down in tears?

Jefferson Parish President (sobbing).

"The guy who runs this building I'm in, the emergency management. He's responsible for everything.
His mother was trapped in St. Bernard Nursing Home.
And everyday she called him and said, 'Are you coming, son? Is somebody coming?'
And he said, 'Yeah, mama. Somebody's coming to get ya.
Somebody's coming to get you on Tue.
Somebody's coming to get you on Wed.
Somebody's coming to get you on Thu.
Somebody's coming to get you on Fri.
And she drowned...Fri night. She drowned on Fri. night"

"Nobody's coming to get us.
Nobody's coming to get us.
The Secretary's promised. Everybody's promised.
They've had press conferences...I...I'm sick of the press conferences.
For God's sakes, shut up and send us somebody."
He also gave several examples of FEMA turning back assistance and also cutting their communication lines.

I'm sure there are many more tales like that and of the police officer committing suicide.

Just an mind-numbing tragedy.

Man!! That should never have happened. The suicide rate will probably go up in the comming days, sadly going up. I fear the total death count will far exceed the Twin Towers coming down. This whole deal on the Gulf Coast is going to be a long drawn out process.

Talking about it is best for most that are in direct contact with it. In the near future, crisis councelors are going to be in much greater demand than MDs.

Take care dmcowen674. Know that the rest of the States and their ppl do care.

Yah! I saw it conjur. It was gut wrenching.

I also watched BBC World on PBS last night. We are the laughing stock because we can not respond properly to our own yet think we can tell others how and what to do.
If I was a terrorist, this present clusterfvck would indicate how profoundly mismanaged we are. I feel genuine shame for how this whole thing is being handeled. As I stated in an earlyer post, 140 years later the Feds will get Reconstuction wrong again......

PM me IF I'm out of line in this thread conjur.............

Oh, I think it's fair to question and criticize ourselves. It's obvious SOMEBODY (probably multiple somebodies) really dropped the ball and failed to provide the proper direction and order and hundreds, no, probably thousands of people have paid the ultimate price for that.

The Gulf Coast is not out of the woods yet. Millions are homeless and will be for months or years. Sites like those with people offering homes and places to stay will be needed for quite some time. I've even thought of opening my home (I have a 3br apt) to someone but there are plenty of places here in town that can provide better living spaces and be able to offer services that I can't that still have availability.

Hey Conjur and all others that have contributed to this thread.. Awesome Job and service you have provided in this thread. Thank You.

Just a question:
Is it safe to assume that all the homes underwater in the toxic soup need to be bulldozed and flattened. We're talking thousands of homes.. basically most of the city. Foxnews says mentioned 'toxic mold' ...

I didn't want to start a new thread on this and don't have time to read all of them either.

Thank you sir.

I am trying to report any good news I can as well especially in regards to the work I am doing with a massive team that is helping us from all over the country.

Many cell sites coming up including goal of getting City Hall up just a few minutes ago.

A lot will be up on the North Shore shortly. We are coming back faster than I thought would be possible.

Considering many of them were in water up to and over their roofs, quite possibly. I'd imagine foundations are shifted/cracked, support beams warped from the water, etc.

Thanks, I'll add that to the OP.

I also came across this:
The Louisiana Disaster Recovery Foundation has been established in order to help provide immediate assistance to our citizens in need through a network of Louisiana charities, non-profit and governmental agencies, including clearinghouses like the Louisiana VOAD (Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster). The Foundation is also designed to support long-term family restoration and recovery by focusing on education, housing, health care, legal assistance and jobs for Louisiana families whose lives have been altered by Hurricane Katrina.

By postal mail, please make donations payable to Louisiana Disaster Recovery Foundation, Inc. and mail to:

Louisiana Disaster Recovery Foundation, Inc.
Fed. Tax ID No. 20-3399944
c/o Division of Administration
1201 North Third Street, Suite 7-240
P.O. Box 94095
Baton Rouge, LA 70804-9095
Inquiries may be directed to: LouisianaRecovery@la.gov

THIS FUND IS IMPORTANT FOR TWO REASONS...

1. Relief goes right to victims
2. MONEY HELPS LOUISIANA KEEP IT'S INDEPENDENCE!!

From Washington Post:
Behind the scenes, a power struggle emerged, as federal officials tried to wrest authority from Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Babineaux Blanco (D). Shortly before midnight Friday, the Bush administration sent her a proposed legal memorandum asking her to request a federal takeover of the evacuation of New Orleans, a source within the state's emergency operations center said Saturday.

<snip>

Blanco made two moves Saturday that protected her independence from the federal government: She created a philanthropic fund for the state's victims and hired James Lee Witt, Federal Emergency Management Agency director in the Clinton administration, to advise her on the relief effort.

WWL: Door to door searches have now started, both to find the remaining survivers, and to start a body count.

So I just did a head-count of ATOT'ers we knew were in the way before it hit; Schadenfroh has still not been on since last week.

That video and the phone interview with the mayor sum up how I feel about the whole disaster. OMGWTFBBQ x eleventy billion

Watched a survivor telling her story earlier on the WDSU feed. She was seriously p!ssed and who can blame her? Still, she managed to measure her responses and dish out the much-needed smackdown.
