Best wishes to Schadenfroh and his family, here's hoping they got out safely and are busy settling in somewhere.

AP got it wrong. CNN has update

Police shot and killed at least five people Sunday after gunmen opened fire on contractors crossing a bridge to make levee repairs, The Associated Press reported.

Deputy Police Chief W.J. Riley told AP that police shot at eight people who had guns, killing five or six.

The Army Corps of Engineers told AP that 14 contractors escorted by police were fired upon while crossing the Danziger Bridge, which spans a canal connecting Lake Pontchartrain and the Mississippi River.

Hey Conjur and all others that have contributed to this thread.. Awesome Job and service you have provided in this thread. Thank You.

Just a question:
Is it safe to assume that all the homes underwater in the toxic soup need to be bulldozed and flattened. We're talking thousands of homes.. basically most of the city. Foxnews says mentioned 'toxic mold' ...

I didn't want to start a new thread on this and don't have time to read all of them either.

As a structural engineer who has looked at flood damage before, the only thing that could even be possibly saved would be the foundations of these homes (assuming they are slabs -on-grade).

The structural wood walls would likely rot during the drying process and this would significant reduce the strength of the walls and floor framing.

Mold growth will be a problem for all of these houses. As long as the source of the moisture is there, mold growth is inevitable given the deep south conditions.

NEW ORLEANS - Police shot eight people carrying guns on a New Orleans bridge Sunday, killing five or six, a deputy chief said. A spokesman for the Army Corps of Engineers said the victims were contractors on their way to repair a canal.

The contractors were walking across a bridge on their way to launch barges into Lake Pontchartrain to fix the 17th Street Canal, said John Hall, a spokesman for the Corps.

Earlier Sunday, New Orleans Deputy Police Chief W.J. Riley said police shot at eight people, killing five or six.

The shootings took place on the Danziger Bridge, which spans a canal connecting Lake Pontchartrain and the Mississippi River.

No other details were immediately available.

Fourteen contractors were traveling across the Danziger Bridge under police escort when they came under fire, said John Hall, a spokesman for the Army Corps of Engineers.

I'm sure the police force in NO is stressed to the limit, but they opened fire on a group of people that were being escorted by police? :Q

This is a developing story, the shootind that is. I was just watching MSNBC and they said the police left the contracters
to pursue the shooters. So I really don't know.

Whoever can answer: What powers would Blanco have to surrender in the long term for Federal aid. I searched
the Washington Post page and could not find anything. conjur brought this up several posts back.

TIA, if you post a link.

That's excellent news.

When CNN showed the 2nd copter landed a few hundred yards away and no one rushing to the down copter, I kinda felt that it didn't look as bad as it seemed.

they just interviewed the Chief of Police in NO and he basically substantiated the earlier reports but said that 5 were shot, 2 were killed, and a sixth idiot was being pursued!

Yes, that was a second copter that has gone down, a Civy and a Coast Guard.

Well, the stage is set for the major telethon:

Shelter from the Storm: A Concert for the Gulf Coast will be aired at 8pm EDT Friday on CBS, ABC, Fox, NBC, the WB and UPN. PAX however will be showing a rerun of Diagnosis Murder.

I was wondering how long until helicopters started going down for various reasons. There has been so much activity involving them it's just a matter of time. Hopefully there will be no more.

I was thinking the same thing, the amount of choppers in the air and the hours they're being used for. It must be a nightmare for the maintenance teams.

Louisiana officials say repairs have been completed on the 17th Street canal levee breach in New Orleans and water is being pumped out of the canal and into Lake Pontchartrain.
