I was just looking at ur john mayer link in your sig.

He needs to be singing 'Something's Missing' also. God knows something's missing in the leadership of our nation.

My charity PSA, not to take away from GooeyGUI's hard work:

Remember your local charities still need money to help people in your own state.

Whenever a disaster like this hits, many people donate as much as they can to Red Cross and they end up with more money than they can use, while people stop supporting local charities because they are broke.

The radio station I listen to collected over $60,000 in donations Friday, so I'll be sending a check off to Northwest Harvest (Washington state food bank supplier) instead.

Also, give.org (BBB) has info on most national charities, look up the stats before giving to one you haven't already heard of.

If you stop by Sears anytime soon, you can make a donation for the Red Cross there. I work at Sears and a lot of people were more than willing to add a few dollars onto their total to help out.

At my local Walmart they have a small moving truck parked out front for stuff that they are going to drive down there. I ussually give money to a charity, since there's no transportation cost to get it there, and they can better coordinate what is needed. But it struck me that my Healthcare Spending Account now has an over-the-counter benefit, and that OTC drugs would be a good high-value/low-volume item to put on a truck like that. And besides - I lput to much in there last fall and won't be able to spend it all anyway.

So I went in and grabbed a bunch of childrens/adults/infants tylenol, ibuprofen, robotussin, Imodium, etc. And a few items from the end-of-season discount rack.

Anybody know the rules for HSA accounts? Can I get in trouble for getting reimbursed for stuff that I give to charity? I suppose it's unlikely unless I get really carried away and draw attention to it.

My Mother is the co-manager of a wallpaper plant up here in Chicago, and one of the plants they get raw materials from is outside Biloxi. There is a camp right near there.

She worked with all the employees in that plant and the others, and asked for donations of the essentials, and with less than 24 hours notice, the employees had gotten enough for 12 pallets of water, diapers, toothpase, plankets, etc that is on its way. My contribution was 210 gallons of drinking water (a full pallet, 1700 lbs worth.) in the back right.

It doesn't matter if you give $5 or $5000, a box of Huggies, or a blanket. Every little bit helps.

Donations to the North Shore Animal League are being taken as well. They need containers, trucks and cash donations. Individuals in neighboring states willing to adopt or act as a foster home should contact them immediately, there are thousands of homeless animals.

The race to save the animals will be a short one- animals aren't smart enough to not drink the toxic water. Most will be poisoned and die painful deaths unless they're able to be rescued.

For those of you among the legions of corporate lackeys (like me), be sure to check if your company offers matching for your donations to the Red Cross and Salvation Army.

The Yankees gave $1mil to the Salvation Army earlier today... that's twice what my company has given (Mercedes Benz USA), don't let your evil corporation of cheap bastards get away with that kinda BS.

Also, UNICEF is collecting funds to help out especially for helping children and the families affected by Katrina, yet another charity to donate to.

EDIT: An additional charity that needs help working to rebuild the community for children and their families is the Big Brothers and Big Sisters

Bravo! I donated a smaller amount, because it's almost all I could afford at the moment. Once I get some more allowance money, I will send it to the Red Cross. Please help out, guys!

USEFUL PET RESCUE SITE:
http://www.vetmed.lsu.edu

PETS OWNERS WITH PETS LEFT BEHIND: READ THIS
From http://www.vetmed.lsu.edu
Confined Pets in Need of Rescue from Disaster Areas
Residents who left pets in their homes may call toll-free (888) 773-6489 between 8:00 am and 6:00 pm or e-mail katrinalostpet@ldaf.louisiana.gov to leave information about the number of animals that need rescuing, their species, and their confined location.

Residents are now being allowed back into certain parts of the Greater New Orleans areas. While we will do everything we can to rescue as many animals as possible, your pets will have a better chance if you can get in and rescue them yourselves. Please watch the news media for announcements of which areas residents may re-enter.

If you do rescue your pet yourself after requesting rescue through this shelter, please notify us so that we can remove your name from the waiting list.

If you need a place to leave your pets for housing and care after rescue, please bring them to us at the John M. Parker Coliseum on the LSU Campus. We will care for them until you can be permanently reunited.
