So... I'm in Puerto Vallarta.... They evacuated us to a school a few miles inland... Going to be a hell of a night...

Good luck with that plan, because you are going to need it.

Just don't rely or depend too much on the hotel management or the authorities to to possibly save your life, because you need to use your wits and instincts as much as you can at this point.

I don't know what I would do in your situation, but I would certainly be thinking for myself as much as possible. I can't imagine the winds will die down all that much (190-180 mph?) when it hits landfall when you are evacuated only a few miles inland. But if they took me 50 miles inland to a hardened bank vault, then I might feel a bit more secure.

Just got Internet back- we were told puerto Vallarta got spared for the most part... Actually where I was at there was a ton of rain but absolutely no wind... It was pretty bizarre.. Supposedly we're going to be heading back somewhat soon as soon as the roads are opened again depending on storm surge... Really feeling lucky if we really get through this with out any further damage... Internet is really slow so haven't confirmed that's what happened or how bad the damage is in other areas

I guess you posted while I was posting, glad to know you survived it so far!

And it's pretty amazing the phones and internet is already back up there, because my phone and internet often goes out for hours and hours in rain storms a lot.

Looks like it hit land south of Puerto Vallarta:

http://www.weather.com/storms/hurricane-central/patricia-2015/EP202015

It's hard to tell for sure where it made landfall just off that map, but it looks like Manzanillo and Colima may be the first to get hammered. Where it goes from here is up to the storm. Projections have it heading somewhat towards Guadelajara and Tequila. It will (apparently) still be a Cat3 when it gets to that point.

edit: looks like it just missed Manzanillo to the North.

Never mind... Guess we're not going back tonight

I would imagine not, if power and water is off indefinitely and raw sewage is backing up in all the drains in the hotel, if it survived the hurricane.

You can't clean up flooding and raw sewage in a couple of hours if its covering the floors of the hotels, I would be very wary of returning to something like that.

From what I heard, they really did not get hit... We're only a few miles away and have had zero wind at all, just a shit ton of rain

My uncle lives in Barra de Navidad in Jalisco, Mexico. Right on the Pacific coast, just a few miles NW of Manzanillo. Just got word that while he and his wife are safe, his house, shop, and vehicles are destroyed, as well as his restaurant and the hotel the restaurant is a part of. They said waves crashed OVER the hotel and restaurant at one point. So awful. They seem to go through catastrophic events like this every 15-20 years or so. Last time it was earthquakes that destroyed everything.

It's kind of hard to tell about damages from those "live feeds" from there, but it looks like power is on, so you may get to go back, if it didn't heavily flood from the storm surge.

That's terrible news. And I'm glad they survived it.

Those are the kinds of tidal surges I would expect in a severe hurricane like this.

Ugh. Not surprising, given the intensity of the storm when it made landfall. It's still got 160 mph winds. This thing is a monster. I would imagine conditions in San Patricio are pretty bad as well.

edit: winds down to 130 mph. It's losing steam quickly.

Good to know you guys made it through OK! It's just dumb luck this hit kind of in the middle of nowhere.

Good that it missed you.

A lot of people won't be lucky though. :\
That's a lot of energy and water for that storm to dissipate.

It looks like it's either moving through the mountains now, or will be shortly. That should take away some of the energy. It would be nice if weather.com's tracker had a zoom feature. Is any other site doing a better job of tracking the storm?

It looks like it's somewhere around Ameca, or it was maybe 15-20 minutes ago.

Except hurricanes tend to make landfall, ya know, on the coast. Where most people live.

I have to give you that much, but still, how much coastline is covered by city compared to how much is covered by nothing except maybe the odd ranch or beach house?
