I have to give you that much, but still, how much coastline is covered by city compared to how much is covered by nothing except maybe the odd ranch or beach house?

It looks like landfall was La Manzanilla, which is neither an odd ranch nor a beach house. It's a small community of maybe 2k people. That and San Patricio were closer to landfall than Barra de Navidad. San Patricio has a population of ~7.5k people.

There were worse places, but still . . . given the intensity of the storm . . .

Oh yeah it could have been worse. It can always be worse than it is, but that doesn't mean it's awesome, or that we were even particularly lucky. That's all I was getting at.

Well that is an intellectual response.... who pissed in your corn flakes this morning.

By the time of your post we had already been over that, you didn't really add anything of value. I dunno, it seems appropriate, if curt. If you crave something more wordy just look at what I wrote not five minutes before you posted that.

With something the size of this hurricane, it's kinda fucking lucky. Maybe 15-20% chance to hit a larger city?

Well, it might have been because it weakened to a tropical storm dashing the hopes of news outlets for all those valuable clicks.

Yep, it downgraded quickly. Rolling over mountains will do that to a storm. There will be a lot of rain and some flooding, but not as much wind damage as there "could have been".

Glad the thing did landfall at a spot that wasn't highly inhabited.

My uncle lives in Barra de Navidad in Jalisco, Mexico. Right on the Pacific coast, just a few miles NW of Manzanillo. Just got word that while he and his wife are safe, his house, shop, and vehicles are destroyed, as well as his restaurant and the hotel the restaurant is a part of. They said waves crashed OVER the hotel and restaurant at one point. So awful. They seem to go through catastrophic events like this every 15-20 years or so. Last time it was earthquakes that destroyed everything.

Good to hear they made it out alive.

Interesting. I had never heard that, and it seems the kind of thing worthy of news reportage. Thanks. I remember Bangladesh sending us one million dollars for Katrina. These are important gestures and help us keep ourselves and our role in perspective.

Just got Internet back- we were told puerto Vallarta got spared for the most part... Actually where I was at there was a ton of rain but absolutely no wind... It was pretty bizarre.. Supposedly we're going to be heading back somewhat soon as soon as the roads are opened again depending on storm surge... Really feeling lucky if we really get through this with out any further damage... Internet is really slow so haven't confirmed that's what happened or how bad the damage is in other areas
Congrats on dodging a bullet, dude.

Damn. I'm in the "5-8 inch" zone on that map. Anytime it rains that much the power goes out around here, just because. This sucks.
Although it's worth pointing out that as suckage goes, losing power from too much rain due to the strongest hurricane ever recorded is pretty mild suckage.

Good to know you guys made it through OK! It's just dumb luck this hit kind of in the middle of nowhere.
I do not believe in Murphy's Law!

A lot of dumb luck happens, it seems especially with natural disasters. Humans, contrary to popular opinion do not dominate the planet, at least as much as so often conceived.

Texas is flooded again. I feel bad for people who are in low lying areas.

Good news though, the Fire Ants ban together and float.

NO! It is only the strongest hurricane in the eastern Pacific, and does not include typhoons in the western Pacific, or Atlantic storms.

Well, if by strongest you mean inferred strength through atmospheric pressure measurements, then yes, you are correct. Typhoon Tip has a lower pressure at 870 millibars. In that case, Patricia is the strongest in all the tropical basins where the term "Hurricane" applies.

However, no storm has ever been recorded as having 200mph sustained winds. Whether Typhoon Tip or other tropical cyclones ever actually had higher winds is unknown. Only Patricia has officially hit the 200mph mark, the first ever recorded to do so.

BTW... pressure measurement is not always 100% suggestive of storm wind speed, so having a lower pressure does not guarantee other storms had achieved a higher wind speed.

Fixed.

Not bad here in DFW, we're getting steady rain which is great for water reserves and isn't really flooding anything. Houston might be a bit fucked, but nothing they aren't used to for the most part. Most of the lakes around here were still pretty topped off from the watershed spring.

We're getting some pretty good rainfall but at my house it's still less than an inch so far. (SE of Houston)

So far we got about 5" of rain in San Antonio. Not as bad as I'd have thought, but the mountains in Mexico really broke it down.

A homeless man was swept into flood waters while looking for his dog. They can't find him.
