I'm not sure you can say it isn't a hurricane right now. Still seems to have tropical characteristics.

I'm thinking landfall right around Atlantic City at about midnight.

Yeah, this is getting worse than expected. Still have power here in VA fortunately. I think that's going to change.
Uh, no, it's not getting worse than expected. It was expected to get worse. People didn't listen, else downplayed it. I just saw a report that people in Atlantic City are asking for help - the majority of the city is flooded, and Sandy is still 250 miles and many hours away.

I haven't cared about the weather in years.

Every damn year the news says ITS THE WORST STORM EVER OMGGGG... and its just another storm. Every. Time. We had hail the size of golf balls in like 1996... that was the most interesting thing I've seen. And it did zero damage.

Are the warnings and doom and gloom for old people? Women?

I wonder if Insomniator can swim

Anybody got any tips on keeping things in a deep freeze chilled longer? Obviously, the more cold mass the better, but what about supplemental insulation? Building an air-tight box out of R10 2" foam insulation seems like it would work well, though easier and cheaper to wrap in a bunch of fiberglass batts. Anything else...?

Significant wind speed increases here, I think in the last hour we've picked up 10-15MPH sustained and we're still a long way from the inner storm. Coastal flooding here is going to be terrible, the worst of the storm will arrive right around high tide tonight.

Insulation does work to a small degree. Anything that you can wrap around the freezer whether it's real insulation or just blankets is going to help.

Whenever I watch Mayor Bloomberg's press conferences I find that I just can't stop watching the sign language woman standing to his right.

EDIT: I think it's the facial expressions.

EDIT2: I mean I know her job is serious but it just always reminds me of a little kid making faces behind someone doing something serious in nature.

NOVA is getting heavy rain, but its hardly anything new, certainly not dangerous. We arent even close to flooding.

I'm in Mahwah NJ, and it's getting very gusty..... yet I'm still at work. Not looking forward to the hour ride home in my little Mazda 3.

Put a bunch of 1 gallon jugs of water in it to freeze before the power goes out. After the power goes out just don't open it and you should be fine for quite a while. Those things are insulated really well to begin with.

That's a good idea!

During Irene last year I actually did wrap my freezers with fiberglass batting.

Pretty much anything you can do to insulate will help. But the most important thing is to not open the door.

Freezing water ahead of time is also a good idea, but that takes hours and it will be counterproductive if you do it too late.
