Whenever I watch Mayor Bloomberg's press conferences I find that I just can't stop watching the sign language woman standing to his right.

EDIT: I think it's the facial expressions.

EDIT2: I mean I know her job is serious but it just always reminds me of a little kid making faces behind someone doing something serious in nature.

Hahaha, I was totally taken by her too.

It's Gods punishment for the Republicans running a Mormon.

Really . Whys it hitting the heart of the blue colored states. Nice try but judgement has been rendered . One can call out for an event if witnessing . But from that point on its all Gods work

Dude, in NYC you're still 10 hours away from the worst you're going to see and the worst you're going to see is a lot weaker than the worst the storm is going to inflict.

Worst wind or rain, sure. But NYC could be on the northeast side of landfall, which will mean it will get more storm surge. This is an area that is already vulnerable to storm surge to begin with. The east river is already over its banks in Long Island City.

In terms of damage, parts of NYC are at risk, simply from high water.

Yes. But the points are that what happens in New York City is a long long way from being at its worst which will be more like 10pm tonight, and that even the worst in NYC is going to be far milder than what's going to happen in south Jersey. Anyone sitting in NYC at this moment wondering what the hype is about because it's not so bad is a major idiot.

Oh, absolutely. NYC is definitely not going to get the brunt of the storm, even though they'll see their share of water. Like you said, to ask what the big deal is now is foolish. And that's regardless of where you are. NYC will not be unscathed even if it isn't directly hit, is all I was trying to point out.

How big is the surge and when is it going to hit land? I hard 11 feet. I guess it's already hitting NJ.

There is no such thing as a "flood tornado", a big storm like Sandy might generate flooding and spawn tornado's but those are separate events. The largest hailstone ever recovered is 1.9 lbs, not quite melon-sized but plenty big to do major damage to cars and even dwellings..
Link to your biggest hailstone ever recovered . What kind of Melons was I referring . Like you know . LOL at your misguided attempt at being all knowing.

Surge is expected to be over 7 meters. Combination of full moon and storm direction. High tide is also around 2000
200-250 miles out and moving at 15-18mph.
Do the calculations

Having fun in Jersey right now. I'm far away from the coast so I just have to be worried about being without power or water. More probable losing power tonight than water.

Excellent point

Yes it was as all shall soon discover . Many plan the tree planting based on the wind being from other direction . Lots of these trees will fall on homes. Overnight this thing picked up steam and is coming ashore as a hurricane. Other news is that some wind gust in excess of 120 mph with a constant 80 mpg gust.

Landfall this evening. Surge expected to be up to 11 feet from southern New Jersey to New Haven. Despite it not receiving the brunt of landfall and the worst wind and rain, due to funnel of the harbor, the worst surge is expected near New York City, with perhaps as much as 13-15 feet.

Its bad here. I have three pumps in the basement and they can't keep up with the tide rising and pushing water into the floor and walls. I am worried about the furnace getting flooded. This storm is living up to its billing. It was not all hype. It will be much worse later around midnight. I fear the worst.

Sandy hasn't arrived this is just the warm up . 11 feet above norm surges for NYC

Indeed. The storm is 5hrs away as of 1pm.....

In RI it's windy (40mph gusts) and a bit rainy but nothing compared to Naragansett Bay. It's going to be ugly at 8pm tonight on all the NE shores....
