They have to do extensive checks, especially the tunnels.

Most of the east river subway tunnels completely flooded out. Water in lot of other places in the system also. One LIRR tunnel to Queens flooded. Washouts likely on the commuter lines.

My block in Philly is a war zone trees down, a lamp/wire post snapped right in front of my house, down the block transformers laying all over from being blown off... just got power back after 10 hours (most of which I slept through)

MTA saying 14 hours to four days. I say four days if they are lucky.

i wonder how many dead rats they're going to pump out of the subway

I imagine they will check tunnel integrity first before pumping. Last thing you want is making penetration bigger by changing the pressure. Not that I think there are cracks, but it is better to make sure.

Here's a pic of the pier I posted about yesterday.

Hy 12 from Nags Head to Hatteras got whacked again. Hard to get much info right now. One report had new inlet near Rodanthe (south of the other new inlet at Rodanthe from the last storm) but may just be temporary wash over.

Side note: if you ever feel a need to feel small and vulnerable, hang out in Rodanthe, NC for a bit, a sand spit in the middle of the Atlantic with 50 miles of open sound between you and the next solid ground.

Here's the crazy thing....with Irene, the eye tracked literally right over my house. It was just kind of windy, nothing too outrageous, very little rain, didnt lose power at all.

This was ten times worse. Power went out early and then it only got worse from there. We never flood in my part of long island, but the wind was unbelievable. My house was literally shaking with the gusts, I lost of a ton of shingles and a storm door. By far the worst part was the power lines causing fires. It was one thing when I thought we'd just be stuck inside with no power. No big deal. But the power went out, heard a huge explosion, and then the sky turned orange on the other side of the block, and got really bright really quickly. Was really close and went on for a few minutes and only got brighter, and me and my wife were absolutely unprepared to run for the hills. Meanwhile I'm trying to get on 911 cause there's an actual fucking emergency and the lines are clogged. Not sure what was on fire, must have been a car because something was clearly fueling it. Someone must have been clutch with an extinguisher because that got put out just before the engines arrived, but you could see flashes and fires in the sky all night. Fucking unreal.

Reporting from Erie, PA: It was a windy, cold, rainy storm. Or as I call it, "early winter in Erie." :awe:

The end of I-79 was closed, so I had a minor detour getting to work. I didn't see any power outages, and only a few branches down. There was one or two light posts down, though I didn't get a good look at them, so they may well have been taken down by a car impact. The local news outlet, FOX66, doesn't really seem to have much in the way of reporting on anything local. The primary concern on the local Twitter feeds appears to focus on the impact this will have on Trick-or-Treat times.

Do you live in Rodanthe? My folks had a cottage in Frisco for a long time. I spent 2-3 months every summer down there from 1977-1999. Went back for a visit a couple years ago, and the whole island was nearly unrecognizable.

If you really want to feel isolated, go spend a month or so on Ocracoke. Or better yet, Portsmouth island.

A tree went down near my house, blocking one direction of the main loop of the subdivision, cruiser sitting in front of the tree with lights flashing.

I guess they want to prevent idiots from driving into the downed tree...

I'm in Reading, PA this week...nothing too bad to report. Power only flickered a little last night but otherwise stayed on. It was windy but not crazy. No flooding or downed trees in my direct vicinity.

Was windy like a mofo all last night. Peak gusts got up to 80km/h (50mph). Got up this morning and didn't see any damage. We've got a lot of huge trees in my neighbourhood but most are still young enough that they just bend in the wind.

Apparently Sandy has taken some websites off line. Gawker Network is still down. Whether that's good or bad is a matter of perspective.

So far I've got at least one friend with a completely flooded coastal house, one a few blocks inland with 3 destroyed cars and a pretty fucked up house...the deck just floated away!

Easily the worst storm I've ever seen. I know it's not Katrina but this was real, real bad. They're saying 85% of LI has no power. Its easier for me to remember who does have power instead of who doesn't.

Crazy.

Here at my home in Wayne, NJ, we have lost electric power as of 6:40PM yesterday. Now running essentials on backup generator. Some small (about 2 inch diameter) branches came down and one whole tree (about 8-10 inch diameter and about 10 feet or so high) along the curb in front of my home has come down (township owns the trees along the curb). Other than that, no issues. Rivers are not expected to hit flood stage. Now we just have to wait for JCP&L (aka First Energy) to find and correct the power outage. No cable TV, but they probably how no power to equipment on the poles.

Not much to report on in my neighbourhood. One guy's car got nailed by a fallen branch, but it didn't look too bad. Just a window or two broken. A few streets over, there's an uprooted tree. That may have taken out a car. Power's on, garbage bins fell over...

Rest of the city not too bad. Some power outages, transit a bit slower, but my commute was "normal".

Christie saying NJT will be down for several days at least. Many washouts on the lines.

PATH system flooded. A week to 10 days before service could resume.

I saw someone earlier saying, "well, compared to the total population in that area, x number of customers without power isn't that much." The numbers given are the number of accounts without power, not the number of people without power.

We lost power fairly early; checked the site and they expected it restored before midnight. An hour later, the restoration time was today by noon. As I was topping off the generator's gas before going to bed, all the lights popped back on. I was happy, but sad. Now the generator is that much heavier & I have to carry it back to the garage today.

Crazy wind all last night here. Kept me up with the howling of it. Very tired now.

Its still raining here and cold. Heat is messed up in our building. Doing laundry and surfing the net.

I am supposed to go out and help my GF but the weather is still pretty crappy here.

I can't believe I'm going to say this but...credit where credit is due to AT&T for not losing cell service, even though the entire island is in the dark.

Most towers should have a backup power supply to last a few days.
