Gasoline issues here in Wayne, NJ as well. Only a couple of stations have Regular / Mid / Premium gasoline. Some only have diesel. Lines are over 4 blocks long (would probably be about 1 hr wait time) I still have some gas for my generator and we can siphon from some of the other vehicles we have, if needed. Will try again in the morning to get more gasoline. Will be able to make it last until then, as we shut the generator off around 7PM or so.

we're in bloomfield and the wife said the lines are pretty bad there too. our neighbor was heading out to brave the lines and my wife asked him to fill our gas cans for us to donate to our other neighbor off of whose generator we've been hitching.

all the way down route 1 between woodbridge and princeton this morning there were lines between a quarter to a half a mile at every open gas station.

yeah but it could have been worse. the rear windshield shattered, the left side view mirror shattered, there were a couple of dings on the roof but surprisingly everything else seemed ok. adjustor will come out (eventually) to determine the damage and cut us a check then we can get it fixed.

Right...it was a "total non-event" anyways...
There was a poll on one of the weather sites - *on a weather site* - a place people would most likely be looking at if they paid attention to or were curious about the weather. The poll asked if people were taking extra steps to prepare. I can't remember the exact numbers, but it was something like 27% yes, 23% no, 50% "I'm not concerned."

We were only without power for a few hours, but the gas tanks were full, the gas cans were full, the generator was full, I restocked my lamp oil (I don't use candles for light), and I had plenty of food. It made me cringe to think that people who are more likely to be affected for a much greater amount of time were making zero preparations.

Yeah, we stocked up on gasoline on Monday morning. Filled 2 5 gallon jerry cans and my car to the top. My generator uses about 3-4 gals per day. In retrospect, I had 2 extra 5 gallon cans we should have used as well, but forgot all about them.

did you get your generator locally and what does it usually power?

we may have to purchase one eventually.

We have a Coleman unit (not sure of the wattage) and yes, it was obtained locally a few years ago. We have it wired thru a 6 circuit gen trans switch box. Upstairs bath circuit, 1 appliance circuit in kitchen for toaster / coffee, 1 circuit for the refrigerator, 1 for the furnace, 1 for the garage lights and 1 for lights in my workshop area. Llast circuit is wired to downstairs light and it also feeds an outlet or 2. The output is clean enough to run most equipment, including the computer (which goes thru an APC LS700 surge / backup battery unit)

I always lived by the age old motto...It's foolish to hope for the best, without preparing for the worst.

I knew about this yesterday but had to wait till press release.

I also dropped the LAC restriction for AT&T folks during Hurricane Katrina when I worked in the New Orleans switch because AT&T's switch went under 20 feet of water and was destroyed. The switch I worked in was on the 7th Floor of the Galleria Building.

AT&T, T-Mobile open up their networks to offer free roaming for storm victims

The two carriers on Wednesday said that they were opening up their networks to each others’ customers in the two states hit hardest by the hurricane and are offering them free roaming.

The companies say that “customers will be able to place calls just as they normally would, but their calls will be carried by whichever network is most operational in their area.” AT&T and T-Mobile can deliver seamless interoperability with one another since both use the same GSM and UMTS-based wireless standards for their voice and data networks.

I'm back! About 50 hours without power, went out somewhere about 5:30pm on Monday and came back a little while ago.

All things considered, it could have been a lot worse. Shoreline areas got absolutely hammered. There's something about video and pictures of houses being dashed to pieces or floating away that makes 50 hours without power completely bearable.
