Also, ZeZe officially hosed.

HOBOKEN, N.J. (AP) — Officials in the city of Hoboken, N.J., are defending their response to severe flooding from superstorm Sandy.
Public Safety director Jon Tooke says at least 25 percent of the city on the Hudson River across from Manhattan remains under water. He estimates at least 20,000 people are stranded and says most are being encouraged to shelter in place until floodwaters recede.
Tempers flared Wednesday morning outside City Hall as some residents complained the city was slow to get food and other supplies out to the stranded.
Tooke says emergency personnel have been working 24/7. He says the "scope of this situation is enormous."

National Guard troops are delivering food, supplies and gas canisters to people who need them. They are also evacuating people with medical problems or other special needs.

Anyone here in or near the LES? I parked my car below ground near Houston and Ave A and haven't heard back from the site manager, though I doubt he has been there yet anyway. Any chance my car is not swimming?

any updates? most areas are fine if it's not by the river. like right by it. I drove around the manhattanbridge and the area was fine. and dark.

Where are you located?

Coastal Connecticut. Far enough from the shore to be safe from the storm surge that caused all the damage, but my power sub-station is located right on the harbor and flooded. They had to take it offline, pump it out and let it dry before it could be fired up again.

Power is back after 51 hours. Not too bad since PSE&G wasn't promising anything better than Monday at 8 PM.

Lessons learned:

High power LED flashlights are awesome, both for their sheer output AND their 100+ hour low output settings. The Fenix TK35 jlee talked me into buying a couple months back was my primary light source and I never even changed the batteries. That's extensive reading and just balancing on its tailcap to light the room for hours at a time.

Hot showers are a godsend. The last time I had a power outage I was on well water with electric everything. Having unlimited water + hot showers was awesome.

Room temperature is eventually the limiting factor. I was watching the temperature drop steadily inside & eyeing the upcoming high 30's F nights and was not looking forward to it.

Well I did ok. Im about oh, 1/2mile maybe a little more from the ocean. (Sea Isle City, NJ) The islands are underwater and Wildwood got hammered. There was a fire at a house in Sea Isle and some of the firefighters zodiac'd to the scene. Lost power for about 12 hours, got about an inch of water in my finished basement. Lost a tree in the front yard. Could've been ALOT worse. ALOT. I am, however SO glad I own a camper. Makes a great "lifeboat" for times like this... heat, light and a fridge to transfer food to so it doesn't all spoil if need be....

All this talk about power loss has made me realized, I'm really not prepared for an extended multi day outage if one was to happen here in winter. We don't get hurricanes here, but the possibility of a big black out is still possible such as a big disaster at a dam or something like that, and there's always the possibility of a snow/ice storm that is bad enough to cause damage, like Quebec had years back. Rare, but it could potentially happen.

Think I should at least look and buying a small generator and setup an inlet and transfer switch.

If you have the bucks, Honda makes really nice portable generators:

My buddy has one...really quiet and lasts forever on a gallon of gas. They aren't cheap though - almost $1300 for the 2k-watt version with the handle. But they're small, reliable, and quiet...

Yeah Honda's are pretty good and very quiet from what I've seen. Think around the time I want to change my electrical panel I'll look at installing a transfer switch and inlet. I may also go all out, pay more, and get a natural gas powered Generac generator. Though to consider the amount of power outages we get here it's probably way overkill.

PSE&G restored 900k+ customers Wednesday. JCP&L only restored 160k, they said they had to deal with transmission issues before localized repairs. They restored 1000 out of 6000 in my town. I have high hopes that I'll have power back tomorrow. I jealously drove through PSE&G territory today.

The lines at gas stations are insane. I think most people thought they could avoid the lines by going at night. Sucks for them, lines were worse at night.

Reading this shit pisses me off.

How the fuck is that people feel that they are entitled to anything from the city in terms of food and supplies?

Well, if you've paid taxes / national insurance for emergency services to have a duty of care for you in such situations you're more than entitled to being rescued by the city's emergency services.

What you should be asking is how the fact that these people are 'angry' at the speed of response during a natural disaster.

I left Portland in June. Got a job offer I couldn't turn down, but I plan to return eventually. The east coast has some great opportunity but I really prefer the Portland way of life.

As for the gas lines - I filled my forester before I parked it for the last time pre storm so I'm ok for now. I figure I have a week or so before I really need to start thinking about fuel, hopefully supply has corrected itself by then.

Just saw an episode of Destination Tennis about Jersey shore a few days ago, I thought "This would be a great place to visit during the summer". Now the whole place is devastated .

The key question is..were they in a zone that was told to evacuate? if you stay you've got no right to bitch, city hall didn't make a storm this big mother nature did, you were told to prepare for extended outages and you didn't buy food and water OR leave, tough shit dumbass..

Gasoline issues here in Wayne, NJ as well. Only a couple of stations have Regular / Mid / Premium gasoline. Some only have diesel. Lines are over 4 blocks long (would probably be about 1 hr wait time) I still have some gas for my generator and we can siphon from some of the other vehicles we have, if needed. Will try again in the morning to get more gasoline. Will be able to make it last until then, as we shut the generator off around 7PM or so.

That was also the biggest problem in FL 2004, even those lucky enough to score a genny had to be even luckier to find enough gas to make it useable, running even a small 6000BTU window shaker will make a genny burn through a lot of gas. Best bet (if you've got natural gas at you home) is to buy a conversion kit so it runs off NG, since NG pipelines are all underground it was always available..

So true. You don't realize how great a hot shower is until it's gone.

I would give a finger off my left hand for a hot shower right now.

Gas lines are getting pretty insane around here, thank god I have a prius with a full tank.

The patience is beginning to wear thin. The know-it-alls and those with 20/20 hindsight are already pointing fingers. They're the canary in the coal mine. If we don't get power back by Monday, there is going to be blood in the streets.
